Not sure I need 'man maths' to justify this one..... but with an estate already owned an additional car wasn't 'really' needed. However, with an impending house move (and lots of ferrying stuff from the new house to the tip - it's a fixer upper), it's got to be cheaper than regularly using a van (or wrecking the Allroad). Anyway, I've always fancied a Volvo estate, and that seems reasonable enough a reason to part with 100 sheets. A trifling 204,000 miles, MOT until August 2019 and a few warning lights, but other than that (and a good clean at some point) she drives beautifully. I even like the rather fetching shade of Svenska Racing Gron.

A few minor things to sort, I need to resist the temptation to throw too much money at this one. I am also tempted to take her to Le Mans next year (it's my turn to drive and I fancy something left of field to make the trip more of an event). Possible touring car wrap, which (coughs) apparently costs £189.00 inc VAT, which should also cover up the slightly ratty rear end.

I hope you like her - I have to say smile on my face as I drove the Volvo to work this morning was a big one...... probably more than when I had spent 360 times more on the Vantage a few years back. It's the cheapest car I have bought..... let's see how long she lasts.

Great work, where on earth does anyone manage to get a running car with long MOT for £100 these days?

You can't really go wrong with a £100 car with MOT until next summer...it's surely worth more for scrap!?

She's being plugged into the OBD this afternoon to see what faults are showing. The Engine Management, TC and ABS (latter two are intermittent) are a common issue and likely to be sensors (and a cheap fix). One of the techs has taken it out and the report back is that "it's as slow as f**K". He thinks it might be boost pressure. I'm debating whether to buy a new motor for the rear wiper and see if that sorts the issue.

Already falling into the trap of what you must never do with bangernomics - make a list of things that are wrong and look to fix them....

The lack of power is likely down to the boost solenoid, cheap fix though! Mine started failing at 68k on a 2010 Focus which shares similar parts/engine, so if it's never been done on that sorta mileage/age, it'll need doing.

Tell me more about the £189 Touring car wrap! That seems damn cheap.
A quick google didn't bring up much.

Reason I ask is I fancy doing something a bit different/tacky to my S60 T5.

Thus far I've only managed to get my hands on a couple of 'Teng Tools' stickers. A couple of Michelin ones I've put on the back look small and not quite right -

I'm thinking something like this -

Brilliant purchase.

Manual turbo'd ones are hens teeth but an auto is still fine. Just even thirstier that's all. wink

I bought my manual non Turbo 3 years ago with 155k on, for £700. It is without doubt the best car I've ever owned.
When folk say "They don't make them like they used to", it isn't rose-tinted waffle, it's true.
These go on forever. I've done over 30k miles in mine (on 189k miles now) and it has only had 2 new brake calipers, plugs, leads and oil changes.
So about £200 in additional costs for 30k of faultless, comfy motoring.

Once you own one you wish they still made them so you could get a fresh one. hehe

Enjoy yours. Good colour and looks tidy.

Here's my old banger.

I'm currently watching out for a manual Turbo 850 or V70 but they are getting rare. 850R will be ideal.

EML will be trim related, most likely an O2 sensor or coolant temp sensor. Could also be occurring because of a blocked up PCV system. Very easy to check; when the car is warm and idling pull the dipstick up slightly, smoke is a bad PCV. You can also check this by securing a glove over the oil filler on the engine and running the car. If it starts to inflate your PCV is knackered. If its sucked in slightly then your PCV is fine. As you may know a bad PCV in these engines can be a death sentence as the pressure causes seals to blow out. Typically front and rear cam seals (easy to replace), but it can also blow out the rear main seal, which will require dropping the gearbox to replace and so is not really economically viable. Parts are reasonable, about £100, and fitting can take a few hours if doing it yourself.

TC and ABS lights being intermittent points to an ABS module failure. Not cheap to replace but very easy to fix. Held on by 4x E4 bolts on the bottom of the ABS pump. The failures occur due to solder drying out on the connectors. Break the box apart (carefully, obviously!), peel the membrane back and reflow the solder. Or look for ABS module repair services on eBay and pay a chap £40. its worth bearing in mind that whilst your car will run without the ABS ECU your speedo and odometer will not work.

Boost wise, leaking or split vacuum hoses are very common here and are the most likely cause of a boost leaks. Easy to check, plenty of vacuum diagrams around too. Given how cheap hosing is its worth just going round and replacing them all. You should also check the more flexible pieces of hose on the intake side as when these wear and get old they can often start to collapse under boost, choking the car. They also tend to develop holes on the backside that aren't immediately visible if you aren't looking for them.

Is she on an ETM? Cant see the reg so cant tell the year. If so those can be problematic too, worth keeping an eye on.

Great cars though, love my 850 T5 to pieces.
