Which is the best 4x4 pickup with back canopy - Mitsubishi L200, Nissan Nirvana etc?
Economy, reliability and usability being important.
Also, are they much more expensive to insure and run than a car/van?
The problem with the Nissan is it smells like teen spirit when you drive it. Economy, reliability and usability being important.

I had a 2008 one but without the canopy. They are more expensive to run than a van or a car, unless you need a 4x4 that can tow and the truck back then they are quite compromised. However, that said I loved mine.
They are generally pretty reliable as they are built for work. Fuel will obviously be fairly high. And they don't drive like a car in any way. Most of them bounce about when the back is empty especially the current L200 (use one for towing regularly)
Great if you need the load space / 4x4 ability or have big mucky dogs etc
I've had 3 previously but my current xc90 is far better to live with as an everyday family car that can tow / move bulky stuff too

What are you going to do with it?
Visiting flat roofed pubs, feeding 'roids to his dags, etc etc.Genuinely they are all good and have their merits.
The L200 has a fantastic 4wd system, and I believe still manages best in class turning circle.
The Ranger 5 cyl, whilst known for a few reliability hiccups, is an absolute powerhouse of a motor.
The Hilux is renowned the world over for its robustness.
Even the Chinese Great Wall has a reasonable reputation for reliability, albeit is known to ride and handle like a last generation jap truck.
They are cheap to tax due to their load carrying capability, my older L200 used to manage 30mpg with a light load and wasn't hurt massively whilst towing. Insurance can be pricey, like a van. However watch the V5 designation and kerb weight of whatever you buy. Kerb weights in excess of ~2ton will put you in van terratory for speed limits.
