As per thread title.

Monster miler so have a 2.0d. Recently had a 3.0d (specifically a 335d)’as a courtesy car from insurance. Loved it. Started thinking about whether there are any 2.0d engines out there that feel smooth/powerful like a 3.0d

Thanks

All the 2L diesels are all four cylinder engines AFAIK. Not worth the expense, weight and reduction in efficiency to make a 6 cylinder 2.0D as they are all about economy.

The Jag ingenium is awful so don’t waste any energy exploring that route. For a 4cyl I think the smart money is seeking out the most refined, the Vauxhall 1.6d is apparently very good in this area.

Unfortunately, that is called having your cake and eating it.

Most 2.0d sound a whole lot better than the 3.2d in my Shogun, unfortunately it's a big tuneless 4 banger, not a 5 or a 6 pot frown

All I can suggest is a remap to the 2.0d so at least you get more go. Sadly I’m unaware of how to make the engine sound better.

Another solution would be a 6 cylinder 3.0 diesel which is as economical as a 4 cylinder 2.0 diesel.

(I don’t know if one exists though! getmecoat )

Wouldn’t want to wish that on my worst enemy, own a 320d and get a 335d for a week !

I drove an A5 2.0 TDI 190 once, 2016 and it sounded a lot nicer than a 320d, maybe it was noise from the interior but it was quite pleasant

A Volvo S40/S60/S80 D3 or D4 with a 2.0-litre 5-pot (1984cc) might be the closest to what you're looking for.

Alpina D3 biturbo is probably the closest you will get to a 3.0d in performance and sound.
I think Alpina changed the exhaust and inlet something or other so it sounds ok.
I jumped from having a 230bhp 3.0d to the Alpina and while in gear shuv wasnt like to 3.0d overall performance was similar plus the Alpina revs to 5k+
In 40k miles i averaged 47mpg. Sold D3 to friend and that car is now on 340k miles!!

Basically no, otherwise why would you get a 3.0d?
But atm I think in "compact exec" sector the A4 has the best 2.0d engine for refinement

No, and the 335d doesn't even sound that nice.

Maybe in performance, but not in sound!

I had a 123d for over 6 years which basically had the same engine as the D3, it went well enough but didn't ever sound like a 3.0d.

Still I then got a BMW Z4 Coupe - straight 6 N/A petrol is just so much better. It revs to 7K, has 265 bhp and might only do about 34 mpg but that's a price I'm happy to pay. laugh
