Something very unusual just overflew me, in Kent, near Maidstone. Nothing on FR24. It was a very noisy heli; at first I thought it was a Chinook approaching but it was actually noisier (we get those every so often). The noise was changing frequently, often with sounds like thunderclaps.

It looked like something a mad professor built in his barn. Possibly tandem rotors - it looked like it, and there was no tail rotor, just twin tail fins. The body was like a rectangular hulk. Red white & blue, I think. Very odd-looking thing.

No, definitely not that. The rotors, if they were indeed tandem, were co-axial. It really did look home-made.

The London air ambulance doesn't have a tail rotor and I guess that could match the colours you describe.

McDonnell Douglas "NOTAR" Explorer

There is a high speed fan in the tail boom, and a rotating slot at the end of the tail that controls the direction of the air, to counteract the torque.

NOTAR was originally developed by Hughes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NOTAR

Ah, could it be the KA-32 that someone mentioned seeing on Flightradar earlier this week?

There was a Kamov Ka-32 tooling about yesterday, might have been one of those?
