Hi, I’m after some opinions on the above. Can’t believe it but its been a year since I passed my test, so I’ve just renewed my insurance etc but can’t stop looking/thinking about upgrading!

I love the look of the old Fireblades, and surprisingly the insurance is quite cheap (£250 compared to £750 for a newer Blade). I guess I’d like to know would they be a decent step up from my 2011 Hornet, or are they too old now and things have moved on? Appreciate any advice or even suggestions for alternatives. Cheers smile

Fast enough, comfy, well made, great brakes, reliable, cheap (929 more so and not that different really)

Some would say they are the best bike in the whole world ever, but they aren't, they are very good though.

It wouldn't feel like a step down from your Hornet, they still offer 170mph performance, I would happily have another.

Would have thought that it would still be a step up. Had mine for 8 years and 40k miles from memory. Great bike. Can't believe it would feel too dated now but it's been some time since I did mine.

GSXR1000 K5. The best you can afford. Great bikes. Loads of torque. No need to rev them out like some bikes. Will hold good value forever.

Thanks for all the input, I think I’ll go and have a closer look then and take it from there. Scunnylad that 954 is stunning, definitely prefer the colour schemes on the 954s!
Out of interest why is it Hondas aren’t liked much on here? I don’t know a massive amount about bikes but always liked the look of them generally and they are known to be well made?
Like the look of the K5 mentioned too especially in the blue/white. Thats also not bad on the insurance but 175bhp probably too much of a step up I think!

Apparently later 954’s have problems with porous/cracking blocks. Mine split between cylinders 2 and 3. When I started looking at forums there was a lot of instances of it happening, although it seems to happen more in hotter climates.

I have 2002 954.
Yes, I like them optically, and had two of them (both red) at the same time. :-) Sold one to a friend, now he is also enthusiastic about 954.

Light and agile bikes.
Very comfortable.
Beautiful angular shape.
Really strong front brakes (330mm discs).

A bit jerky throttle around 3000rpm, can be cured with a power commander.
Gets hot quick when at stand still and depends on how you sit the frame will cook your legs a bit.

I also had K5 GSXR1000, this bike is great!
First of all - power output is higher than 954, the torque of K5 is something else.
Secondly - it sounds much better than 954 (I have/had both with stock pipes), it sounds very aggressive, a proper liter sportsbike sound. 954 is pretty quiet (which is good for me as I can listen to music and generally it's easier on longer trips).
Third - it feels top-heavy compared to 954, especially at standstill. 954 feels featherweight.
Forth - K5 is more sporty from the saddle, it has better ergonomics for sporty riding imho.
I also think K5 looks great in black.
The handles are very narrow to each other.
I also found it comfortable, but it was easier with 954 in trafic jams in the city, even though 954 gets hot and K5 doesn't.
I really loved that K5, would have never sold it, but was forced to sell it. Replaced it with 2017 GSXR1000R.

English is not my mother tongue.
I speak several languages daily and sometimes I get words mixed up.

Timely thread for me as I find myself looking at cheap 929s as we enter prime bike buying season, Xmas time. wink

I loved my old 1999 one. Big fat thing but it really didn't feel it once on the move. I actually preferred it with the standard can too. Sounded lovely.

I used to think the back end looked dated as hell mind and that was when it was 3 years old. The '98 R1 I bought after it had moved the styling game on a bit. Especially rear ends.
That's the attraction now though, I find all my favourite cars and bikes are from the 90's.

I might take the plunge over winter. I haven't had a bike since 2012.

Cheers that’s useful. One of the appealing things is the weight, it’s basically the same as my Hornet. I’ve seen a two owner 18k one locally for £3200 which looks tidy so might take a look.

Seems to be loads of nice 929s about for around 2k. Just wish they had the colours of the 954s!

Personally, I think 954 looks better than 929. The front light looks nicer. Optically. wink
Also the swingarm is a bit different, it has holes on both sides, again, imho, looks nicer than on 929.
I keep mine with stock pipe, I like that pipe....can I say "visually"? smile
