Claiming mileage
Discussion
So our mileage claims policy is fairly standard. The bit that's slightly complicated is when people go to clients sites directly from home (and then go back home) So, to give some examples;
If member of staff goes to client site directly from their normal base, and then returns to their normal base, they can claim all the miles.
If a member of staff goes to a client site and then goes directly home they can claim the excess mileage over and above their normal base _> home journey.
If a member of staff goes to a client site directly from home, and returns home afterwards they can claim the lower of
- Home -->Client --> Home; OR
- Base --> Client --> Base
It's the 3rd scenario that I'm not too sure about. It would be good to know what other companies have in place and ideally a link to the relevant HMRC guidelines.
Thanks in advance

where's their full time office? Base or do they "officially" work from home.
Don't know the answer to your question but the above would be relevant
The query is for those who have a normal "base"/office but are increasing working ad hoc from home. They're not designated formally as homeworkersDon't know the answer to your question but the above would be relevant
The people who are designated Homeworkers can claim for ALL their business mileage so it's not an issue.

My understanding, adn it seems to be shared by HMRC is that its not a lower or higher figure, but the figure if you deduct the "normal commute". So if Home > Base is 10 miles, and home > client is 11, you can claim 1 mile.
If Home > client is 7 miles, you are out of luck.
That would be the logical interpretation but i am sure I was told a while ago that the rules had changed to "the lower of"..... I just cant find the HMRC guidance If Home > client is 7 miles, you are out of luck.
I probably imagined it!

This has changed. If you drive from home to client and back without going to the office then the entire journey qualifies and business miles in the view of HMRC. If member of staff goes to client site directly from their normal base, and then returns to their normal base, they can claim all the miles.
