Hi,

I bought a second hand (2006) 1 Series back in February.

A while ago, the Engine warning light came on (the yellow one where the engine looks half coloured in) plus the traction control light. I couldn't drive the car above 30/40 mph.........I drove home, then the next day when I was going to take it to the garage, I started the engine, and the lights had gone and it drove fine.

Few weeks later, lights came back on, and as it was due its MOT, I took it in to the garage next morning (lights gone back off by now). They ran the diagnostics - nothing wrong with it, passed its MOT. 2 days later, light comes back on. Next morning, take it back to garage, light back off at this point, and they have tested it and driven it for 2 days, and they can't find a problem

any ideas?

Could be one of numerous sensors thats having a strop. My X3 periodically flashed a 4x4 failure message
Turn car off and restart. No warning. No codes stored.Dealer checked it but could find nothing wrong

There will be a fault code logged. You need to know what it is.
Could be ABS sensor related.

Is your battery charging and holding charge fine?

Electrical issues in these cars can cause all sorts of issues and usually, it's the battery on its last legs

Read the voltage with the car on idle, ignition and running and see what the readings are

If any of them are lower than expected; might be time to get the battery replaced and coded in, if necessary with your car

How do I read the voltage?

I did wonder about the battery as I do multiple short journeys and often Monday to Friday the car sits idle.

That wont be doing it any good!

This is a how-to on how to unlock the cluster on your BMW: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0ZxA1Oe21E&vl...

Which 1 series do you have?

This is a dedicated 1 series forum: https://www.babybmw.net/

There's a wealth of information, so well worth joining IMO

I'd also advise you buy a decent code reader too; something like Carly for BMW (Android and iOS app) and get the correct OBD dongle needed for your phone (again, Android or iOS)

https://www.mycarly.com/product/bmw-app/

Not cheap; but soon pays for itself with coding and error code reading etc

As mentioned above to the OP, you need to put a code reader on it to give an indication of what could be the problem.

Yeah I’m going to get the Rac to come and have a look as I don’t really want to drive it anywhere. See wheat they say. I’ve a feeling it’ll be expensive 😕. I’ve had so many problems with this car. Worst car I’ve ever owned.

Well the Rac have been... and he’s fixed it.
“No 1 injector clamp was lose”
He’s tightened it and it seems to be ok now but I’m going to take it to the garage just in case.
Very helpful and well informed bloke
Was shocked something so small could make so much bloody noise !!

That came up on mine, half yellow, just after I was messing around with my air filter, turns out i never put the hose back on properly.. When I checked the symbol in the manual it indicates a power output, or reduced power problem,
