Sorry, another what car thread.

I currently have a 986 Boxster S, but will soon be getting a new job which will mean a 100 mile a day commute. To make this drive easier I am going to change my car and am considering a BMW 635d or an E Class Coupe (either a 350 or 250). Does anyone have experience of both of these cars, is one better than the other or are they much the same?

Also are there any other interesting diesel coupes that I've not thought of?

Thanks

335d?

A5 has a coupe version.

Would you consider a 5 series for that distance?

Having owned an e250 coupe and had the 350 engine in a c class, I would get the 250 for your needs the 4 cylinder 2.2 is far more fuel efficient than the 6 cylinder 3.0. Its still fairly quick, although doesn't sound great. You will miss the boxster either way but an e coupe is still a nice car.

Why not keep the Boxster and get a cheap car to commute in

I currently own a 635D and have previously owned the A5 3.0 diesel. Although I prefer the looks on the A5 and it done slightly better on fuel I'd choose the 6 series any day of the week. Its soooooo much more comfortable than the A5.

635d would be great alround car, I have the 4.8 version, but been very happy with the overall experience in the 6 series. I have heard great things about tuning the .35d engine, can't comment on the mpg though!

Thanks all, wanted something interesting. Don't really want a really big car, just big enough to make the motorway drive easier. I had thought about a TT but thought they'd had too short a wheel base for comfy long drives. I'm not sure about an A5, for some reason they don't do it for me.

Don't go for the 250 it's not as good as the 350, I personally prefer the E Coupe there reliable bulletproof & when you drop all the windows away & pop the roof it becomes a special place to be.

The V6 has a nice amount of go the 635d has more but I feel the more relaxed nature of the set up suits the car more, trying to find one with 19's on is a bonus, finding one with the hard drive is a bonus.

The A5's are nice but they feel a bit claustrophobic to me compared to the E Coupe, I am bias as I have an E500 Coupe but I had the option of their petrol brethren & chose the Mercedes.

If there's more you'd like to know feel free to ask.

I also much prefer the engine that I had in the 640d when compared to the 350d engine in the GLC. The 6 series engine is much more punchy and it also sounds much better(a little less diesel clatter).

The extra turbo in the 6 series gives it much more punch low down, but keeps the performance going at higher revs too. Whereas the Mercedes engine does suit a more laid back approach...and its great at that in fairness.

Isn’t a 6 Series a pretty big car? At least footprint wise.

What I mean is I don't need lots of cabin space, my family car is an 8 seater Mercedes vito so don't need seats and doors.

What about a mk1 Honda Insight? Not a diesel, but a coupe with an interesting drivetrain and its mpg/smug factor will knock everything else out the park.....

Slow though.

If it's only needed for a 1 person commute wouldn't a 1 Series/2 Series work?

I had a 123d hatchback and it was every bit as quick as my neighbour's Mercedes C250 Diesel Coupe. laugh

What about a Peugeot RCZ 2ltr HDi? Good looking and well equipped car, reliable and will happily do 50+mpg.

Alfa GT JTDM? Smaller than the uberwagens and probably a worse ride, but good on fuel, comfy and a decent steer.

Are you sure you want to get rid of the Boxster... you’re not interested in keeping it and adding a diesel commuter hack?

Budget has not been mentioned, but as they are a cheaper second hand buy than A5/635d/E350 you could consider a Passat CC (5 door Coupe). You can pick up older examples for ~£6k now. Maybe they are cheap enough to buy one for the commute and keep the Boxster for weekend/evening use?

As a good alternative which could help you keep the Porsche I'd suggest a CLK320 Sport you get everything I stated earlier (I would recommend a headunit upgrade) apart from finding one with a sunroof will be a bit harder but you can land a good one for around 6k:

Some very big discounts on new pre-reg 640d’s Grand Coupes on Autotrader at the moment.

I’ve just bought one.

Wasn’t keen on the idea of diesel but I’m very impressed.

Great car for the money.
