Hi,

Just picked up an early X5 F15 50i.

On a long journey in comfort mode when I come to a stop at traffic lights etc the engine would cut out and then start again but put the car in “park” mode. Cue embarrassing engine revs as I try to leave the lights! I have to engage drive mode again to get going. It’s not clear to me whether the car actually intends on cutting off the engine, to be honest, because it quickly starts up even with my foot on the break....

Turning off ASS when I get into the car does stop this from happening. I know putting it in sport automatically stops ASS but we live in London so the comfort mode is preferable.

Any ideas or experience with this issue? The car has just been into BMW for a full service and software update.

Cheers

All sounds normal with the exception of putting it in park...shouldn’t be doing that tbh.

I’d take it back to BMW asap and get them to take a look, especially if it’s only started happening after a software update

Thanks for this.

Seems to be an intermittent issue ie in a 5 min drive it could happen 70 percent of the time, otherwise it works as should. Annoying.

I bought from a landrover garage but will check in with BMW

When stop/start is active and functioning (i.e. conditions allow it), and you stop with foot on brake in an automatic, the engine should stop. Further, the engine should stay stopped if you then engage ‘P’ allowing you take foot of brake. Does this happen?

Thanks. I haven’t tried engaging P and seeing whether the engine remains off. Otherwise it works as you say. Stop. Put foot on brake. Engine turns off. But for me, when I remove foot from brake the engine turns on but the car is in P mode, not D

BMW think it is a mechatronic issue. Quite a few £k to fix smile

Get the ASS coded off.

If it only does it when the car is turning itself off, forcing it into park, who cares... and imo, doesn’t sound mechanical but more a dodgy sensor perhaps?

Personally I find all this new stuff annoying.
I park up in the garage, two button presses to turn off, but then it can whinge it’s not in P (it’s in neutral as I roll off chocks then put handbrake on)... then the car pings about rolling off, not in P, then it puts it in P any way.

So similar to your issue, the car putting itself in P from N is a feature in certain conditions... it seems your car is just doing something it can do (P to N with engine off and brakes off) at the wrong time.

Also remember BMW ‘fixes’ are often just replace everything with brand new parts till it works.

It was covered under warranty to replace the mechatronic which has fixed the issue
