I put up a post regarding my new 2007 335i whereby I inherited a jb4 box/chip thingy, ok I have a downer on things like this as my previous post explains, but after a few decent comments on here and links to explain how they work my prejudice was eased a bit, ok quite a bit it does seem like a competent bit of kit as it happens.... however, the self help guides don't show you how to work it properly, in fact as im writing this I am in conversation with burger tuning UK and they are passing me to a forum where all my questions will be answered, he said they don't come with instructions. I don't want to join a forum to find out how it works, I want proper instructions, so basically someone spends 500 quid on a bit of kit with no instructions then expected to join a forum to finds out how it works, hoping someone will reply. All I want to know is, how do you activate/deactivate the menu options on the speedo gauge display, the maps are easy to sort out, just move the rev counter to the one that suits and come out, easy, but the self help guides say you can go into a menu and delete fault codes, use your temp/fuel gauges for boost etc, menu 6 I think was a feature where the box activates when the engine is at a certain temp.... but no were can I find anywhere that tells me how I can activate or deactivate the features, all I saw was when the guy was going through the menu options, the rev counter was on various numbers depending on what feature he was talking about (on the speedo side), but he didn't explain why the rev counter was on the number hope this makes sense, HELP PLEASE!!! lol

at last cheers, I cant believe the trouble I had to get this info and even more staggered that you can buy a brand new product with no instruction, but there you go cheers for that Just curious option 6 - 1, 6 - 2 regarding the cooling. I notice that my temp gauge doesn't move at all even after 12 or so mins of driving, could this be a feature of the product or is my thermostat stuck open and need a new one? Just(which up until this point that is what I was assuming) this is a ball ache now, dump the stupid box and get it on a rolling road re-map, surely that's easier?

Just remove it and check the car works correctly for a few months, know what’s normal etc.

Then refit and go from there and decide if it’s sonething you want within that context.

yeah I may just do that, it does seem a good bit of kit but complicated if ignorant, now on the option 6 setting, mine is set at 6 (speedo) and 0 (rev counter) which tells me everything is deactivated then with that feature? so Im assuming then that the oil temp activation feature is default? in other words I the car wont activate the jb4 until my hazards go off when oil is assumingly at the correct temp and i cant deactivate that then?? which is the issue I have with the car or jb4 as I assume im on standard map until temp is up then when hazards flash I can 'unleash' the extra power (whereby I do notice the difference quite a lot), but as my car seems to take an eternity to warm up I cant use it generally so pointless. Am I making sense? I cant understand this and I wrote it lol

reading through the list though, i'm baffled as to why anyone would want or need 2 thirds of the things on there, its mostly stuff that would never be noticed or used my most people but there you go.

Depends on your mode of usage and how keen you are. Most of the features are there by request. Can you honestly say you use all the features of your TV, PC, tablet, mobile ‘phone or car infotainment system? Of course not, but different strokes for different folks.

I don't really want to get into a debate as to what features companies should or shouldn't put on products I just found it baffling that it's not easy to find the help required and now I have found the only help available I still have more questions than answers really

I dont understand why you are concerned / ranting about features you dont want and that are turned off by default, just ignore them as you do the unused features on every other piece of tech. that your have. Just concentrate your energies and grey cells on the bits that matter.

Can I suggest that if you dont want a debate about a topic, then don’t start the debate, the purpose of posting here is to provoke a response/disseminate information which I have dutifully done, if you dont want an answer, then dont ask the question.

Because until I put this post up I had no idea what was activated and what wasn't hence my frustration with lack of available instructions, the rant wasn't about options I did or didn't want

I was curious as to whether the hazards flashing when up to temp was a default setting as it appears the position 6 option regarding temperature controls is off but the unit only kicks in when car is up to temp. I only commented on the volume of options was probably not needed but that's my opinion I wasn't looking for a debate on it. I was totally grateful that you helped out with the table

My apologies if I upset anyone, I'll take the unit out like Mr whippy says and see where I am, it's because the car seems to take ages to warm up so never seem to be if it from the box as generally my journey is over before the temp gauge even moves, I'm in the car generally stuck in traffic for at least 15 mins so was wondering if the thermostat was broke or something

My oil temp takes at least 10-15 mins to get going with normal driving.

Coolant temp which isnt shown is much much quicker.

Oh hang on, the one displayed is coolant isn't it? I remember my cavalier thermostat broke so took it out and noticed how much longer the engine took to warm up as coolant was being pumped around all the time, so was wondering if something similar was going here.

Tuning/car products are often notoriously “learny”

Some are awesomely documented, others aren’t.

This one clearly isn’t.

It came free on the car.

The only way you’ll get on with it is to know what it’s like without it.

Trying to understand a new car’s behaviour while something else may or may not be making it work right, and that something comes with no instructions... well yeah annoying.

Hence take it off.
