Been looking online for sporty motability cars and a lot of what I've found on various websites doesn't appear on the motability website. Options such as focus st and mx5. Does this mean they're not available on the scheme? Does the motability website have an exhaustive list or can you choose whatever you like from a a participating dealer within reason?

Motability scheme website should be taken as Gospel.
They are the ones funding, maintaining and buying back the asset.

Do Motability even offer anything remotely sporty? In my experience most of their cars are small crossovers or MPVs.

The Motability site lists them all.

You can get a BMW 218i Convertible, £2499 advance.

Abarth 595 is nil.

Leon FR (2.0tsi 187bhp) is £599

Most of the main dealers can get Motability finance for almost anything.

My uncle's old lady-friend has had lots of cars through Motability: three MX5s, a couple of horrible 4x4 mini diesels and now has just taken delivery of a BMW 320i estate with lots of extras.

Because there's obviously a budget. I think it's 30k. Not sure.

Surely if you are prepared to put enough cash down, you could get the finance within the boundary limits. You wouldn't, but shouldn't is a different matter.

Back in the day, if it wasn't on the list and you desperately wanted it then an advance payment would be worked out for you, not sure if that is still the case now though, since the changes to Motability 5 odd years ago.

You can get an MX5 on Motability (well you could!) I think the advance payment was around £1500, Mazda specifically are notorious for taking things on and off the list and changing the prices month on month.

To see what is available and what the advance payment is you are best off going to the manufacturers site and looking at the motability section (other than Mazda, best to call the dealer)

Pretty much no unless its an adaptation vehicle and even then its iffy!

They removed all the prestige stuff from the list a few years ago because of an image issue, people seem to think if you have a motability car you should be knocking around in the cheapest most basic thing on the road! Motability threads on PH usually don't end well!

Just last year they were doing 3 series, now they're off the list for some reason. Just like the mx5. Seems like the only interesting thing on there is a base spec 500 abarth.

Probably because the new 3 is coming out shortly! List below of what is available from BMW for example!

Advance payment list as well:

Who is the car actually for?

Motability have a 200 bhp cap now, their search function on their website is notoriously crap...

You'll also see the number of cars change often, especially as it was the start of a new Quarter recently, the WLPT thing is also causing a few issues.
