I've been running a new XF now for 2 years (3lt) and have grown to love the larger luxury car. I love the relaxed drive and the soft of the ride.
I'm changing jobs which will mean get the train into London each day so the car will soley be for hooning around the country watching the son play football of a weekend.

My front runner so far is an XJL as early models are in this price range and i love my XF, so this will be the natural progression.

I am also considering the following and wondered what peoples view were:

Mer CLS Shooting Brake
BMW 5 Series GT
Discovery 4
Audi Q5 or Q7

All quite nice choice but the final deciding factor for me was air suspension as it takes comfort to another level IMO and handling that didn't resemble a boat which meant I ended up with 2 Q7's - been very happy with both.

Interesting list.

CLS shooting brake is a great looker, but is more a sporty (read firm) than comfy ride.

5 GT is a 7 series on stilts. More wobbly in corners as a result. A lot of car for the cash though, but you try selling one...

Disco 4, quite different in experience to an XF, let alone anything else!

Q5 is nowhere near luxury. Q7 has waft with the air suspension as others have said, but luxury? It’s more undeclared eBay sales on the school run.

XJ interior is still something else, rare, and very wafty. Assume diesel at that price, although petrols can crop up.

Would be mad not to look at a 7, avoid the common M Sport for max comfort, and an S class in a non taxi-run black on black combo is a wonderfully comforting thing to be in.

A8 also very nice, small alloyed versions are a delight. Was in a taxi away from Munich airport last week at 240kph, happy as Larry in the back talking to my colleague at normal volume. Cream interior really helps.

Was just thinking the same thing, I suppose a 2012 740d Luxury would be the obvious choice

But...

Just watching this guy makes me kinda want to buy a 2007 760LI 439BHP at £12,995 and drive straight out and 'waft'.

OP this is the car to buy the asking price isn't even half the cost of the optional extras fitted when new.

I bought a Maserati Quattroporte.

Is this sane advice? No. Have I had loads of expensive issues? No.

Would I recommend? Oh yes. Do you only live once? Yes
