So my 30yr old sister currently drives a 65plate DS3, this is due for replacement very soon.

Looking to spend on pcp around £250 pcm or personal loan £12500 new as possible probably 3 or 4 yrs old.

Having never been a small hatch person (I drive a Ford F-150).

list so far

Hyundai I30 Turbo
Peugeot 208 gti
Polo gti
Firsta st
Clio rs sport
Mini Cooper S

She doesn’t like the Corsa vxr

Curve ball RCZ

Anything else worth looking at.

Another option: There's a 200bhp Astra that can be leased (PCH) for <£200 / month at the minute (can't remember, think it's 8k miles / year).

Similarly, Octavia vRS (245bhp) was only about £250/year to lease (again, PCH) - but I think all 2018 cars are now sold out.

No. Avoid. They're terrible. Owned one and it was terrible. Made worse by the fact it took an age to get rid of it...

Alfa Giulietta of some description would fit the bill, ditto Kia Proceed GT should be available in budget.

If your sister doesn't need out an out power would a Fiesta ST Line 140 or new Suzuki Swift Sport not suffice?

I'd recommend the Kia Cee'd/Peo Cee'd in GT Tech trim 12k lands your sister a quick good car that's loaded with kit, they're a good steer (think Fiesta ST140 levels) & a very good option & of course there's the fact they'll have 3-4 years worth of warranty.

There are some other warm hatch alternatives:

Renault Megane GT 220 Nav (not quite Megane RS but a very decent steer)

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Vauxhall Astra GTC 200 Limited Edition (the long gearing blunts the performance but these are a swift warm hatch)

Seat Leon FR Technology (not the most fun steer but a decent warm hatch)

Now if the wants a hot hatch then for me it has to be the Fiesta in ST-3 spec with a Mountune 215 kit fitted:

Or in joint second for me would be:

Clio RS200

208 GTI by Peugeot Sport

You can get a 2017 Swift Sport with only 1,800 miles on the clock for £10,795 from a main dealer.

Or lease the new turbocharged one for £254 per month over three years, 8k miles per year. Although I'd probably prefer the n/a one.

Considering it instead of what? They're not the greatest drive but it depends what you're comparing it to.

So in the 18 months and 20k miles I owned one, I had to replace the front brakes twice and two bushes and headlights (they were a bit of a pig because of their position).

It's a terrible steer because of the high position, throwing anything you have (including passengers) on the rear seats all over the place and no matter how light footed I drove it, never achieved higher than 27 mpg- which would have been acceptable if the car was a good drive, but it just wasn't.

The boot is small and is comparable to that of my S1 (a little bigger than a Mini's boot to be fair), but not sure why it was so small given it didn't have a spare wheel. The fuel tank is tiny so you're regularly at the petrol station.

The plus side, the car comes with loads of tech and kit and the satnav wasn't bad. The heated seats were nice, but didn't offer a great amount of support. The door handles are prone to coming away from the body (had to repair twice).

I found the clutch to be particularly harsh on my shin on my 20 mile motorway traffic commute too.

It's the worst car I've owned and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Anyway, back to the OP thread...!

It was on a list of cars I was considering to replace my Mk5 golf GTi.

I have a fiesta ST which is a pretty good all-rounder, reasonably quick but will still average 27MPG when totally abused for a full tank or 45MPG if you are very good for a full tank. It has a decent level of kit, mine is the ST2 and has heated seats day running lights etc, next one up the ST3 has sat nav and cruise control on top of the ST2 levels.

I bought mine 2 years old with 23k on the clock for £10200 so easily achievable in budget, costs have been pretty minimal, major service is a couple of hundred pounds brake pads weren't expensive when I changed those and it has 17" wheels so plenty choice for tyres to suit all budgets.

I suspect given the number of them on the road residuals aren't going to be amazing but again its a decent drive so hopefully be plenty of demand for them in the future.

Coming from a hot hatch you will not find it a good steer at all.

Astra Elite Nav 200
Loads of deals around (just) under 200 - just been quoted for 8k and 15k. Factory order c. 500-1000 upfront.

I recently (3 months ago) bought a 2014 Mini Cooper S with 64000 Miles for £10900 approved used from Mini.

Can’t stress enough what a great little car it is. Compared to my 2011 Polo GTI I had previously it is miles ahead in terms of interior quality and design. It is basically a little BMW and uses iDrive infotainment.

It absolutely flys (0-60 in 6.9s) although feels a lot faster , although as soon as you put it in Green Mode (which is a stupid idea in a Cooper S and and I’ve only used it once) stick cruise control at 60mph it will average a solid 50mpg.

Obviously £11-12k doesn’t go as far on a Mini, and you could get a Fiesta ST with half the mileage but the Mini is just miles ahead in my opinion!

Brilliant thank you, couple of good alternatives suggested.

She is going to do a short list for us to then go and view see what deals are about.

I've owned 7 RenaultSport vehicles and loved them, but there's no way the Clio would be even a consideration against the Fiesta.

Love the ST-3 and sure ill get one when the prices come down even more. Right now the Megane/Focus are the sweet spot for price IMO.
