Dilemma. In about 6 months time I'm going to be spending around £25k on a second hand, reasonably low mileage big estate that has some poke. It needs to be interesting of sorts but my head says go as sensible as possible. Current car is an E61 530i which has been ruinous to run financially, although lovely to drive. Wife now wants something that isn't going to be a nightmare to own.

What would the masses of Pistonheads suggest? Current contenders include:

Sensible:
Skoda Superb 2.0 280ps - quick, big, should be reliable, can get a low mileage quite new one for the budget
E350 Bluetec - huge, super fancy inside, again can get a reasonable one for the budget, but diesel and a bit old man
Jag XF Sportbrake V6 S - lovely looking, better to drive, fast, but diesel and a bit outdated compared to the Skoda or Merc
F10 535i/d - Looks to be the best combination of Merc comfort + Jag handling, presumably pretty quick, very large, probably not particularly reliable (given my experience of Beemers over the years)

Silly:
E63 - interesting, always wanted one, but only older ones (11/12 plates) in budget and presumably horrific in terms of running costs (low MPG is a given, but what about reliability?)
F10 M5 - ok, not an estate (I don't want an E61 M5) but still big and another one on the wish list.

What would PH suggest?

F10. 535 haul ass! I had the previous outgoing model. They are complicated beasties if they go wrong but otherwise lovely cars. i would not rule out the BMW mechanical insurance pack they offer

I've had an F11 535i for over a year now - its brilliant. Fast, comfy, swallows everything we throw at it, no problems. Mines a 2010 and I paid £16k as an approved used car. M Sport with a few options, looks really good on the optional 19s and still has a good ride considering.
