Another Ask Amplifier + Door & Centre Dash Speaker Saga
Discussion
Dear All
I have a 2008 cayman with the upgraded sound (not bose but there are rear speakers) and thought it was awful. I decided to replace the speakers one by one with Bose speakers I got from a breakers yard and a new head unit. It is an on going project due to lack of time and money. Anyway, after successfully replacing the dash tweeters, it was centre dash next. I made a school boy error and didn't check to see if it was working before I replaced it. I tested the bose speaker I had on other connections and it worked so it wasn't a speaker problem. Then at the weekend I went to change the door speakers, you guessed it, the smaller speaker was working but the larger one was dead as a dodo - no wonder it sounded so poor. I did recently take the CDR24 out to check that I had ISO and took a picture of the back. It looks like there is a brown wire going into A2 so I am guessing the amp has blown and will check that next for the tell tell signs - I have also checked the fuse. So this has now raised the following questions:-
1. Will the dash and door speakers work when I replace the head unit as I believe they have an amp built in?
2. Will the new head unit require an adaptor to get the dash and door speakers working?
3. Is the only option to get a new amp in order for the dash and door speakers working? - I have no experience with a soldering iron.
4, Someone told me that the two orange wires coming out of the left handside of the CDR24 were fibre optic going to the amp - how does that complicate things?
5. Why on earth was the system designed this way!?
Pictured below is what I have.
Thanks to everyone that contributes to this site on all topics cayman, they have proved extremely helpful and saved me a lot of money.

The orange fibreglass cables are the fibre optic loop - MOST network.
The light signals are sent around the loop into the various units and interpreted as required. The MOST system is used in Porsche vehicles for the CDC autochanger; Amp; NAV and Phone (for PCM)
The ASK amplifier is not MOST connected for sound; but for security and VIN data. Sound instead having wired connections - the twisted pairs coming out of the ISO connectors. CDR cannot have NAV but a CDC can be connected via MOST. Usually a diagram sticker shows the outputs on the headunit.

Many thanks Pope, that does make things a bit clearer. It explains what I have read in previous articles where the radio display on the dashboard no longer works with a new head unit. I t-h-i-n-k that is the only thing I will lose as I don't have a CD changer or satnav, and I can live with that. However, reading between the lines I am assuming therefore that the only way to get the centre dash and larger door speakers working will be a new amp?
