OK, having put the engine back in and connected everything up the great moment arrived, time to start the beasty....
Oil pump primed....Check
Water Level Ok.....Check
Battery Charged....Check
Petrol in Tank ....Check

Turn key, starts to fire and dies..dead
try again, same result.

Seems like it was only running on the cold start injector, so dying after about 10 seconds.

Checked we had good spark to the plugs, which we did but tried a second coil just in case. Also pulled & checked/cleaned the plugs, which were fine.

Out with the EFI books printed from the Wedgepages, thank you Mike, Mr Mint & co.

Spent all day yesterday working through the fault finding bits and checking everything out.

Nothing was found out of tolerance on any of the resistance, continuity or voltage tests. We had a good spray from the fifth injector indicating good fuel pressure. The injector's could be heard clicking when moving the throttle with the ignition on.

Replaced the fuel filter as a precaution and also tried hard wiring the pump, although the relay was bringing it in ok.

Andy390 brought his ECU along to try that, with the same results.

Now as any of you who have met me will now, I don't have any spare hair to be pulling out, without starting on the chest wig, so things were getting desperate.

Today I tried a replacement, brand new Ignition amplifier module and another Resistor Power Pack, still with exactly the same results....

Has anyone got any suggestions as to what could be the problem as I think I am fresh out of ideas..

Cheers...

May be one of then trees that dogs shout up but I had a similar problem, everything in order but happened after I had flooded it and not starting due to a naff earth to the block. Sorted bad earth and it turned out to be the plugs. I thought I had cleaned them proper but not enough. A good clean and baked off on the house radiator and they worked. When I say clean, it was a thorough going over and a quick warm up on the gas ring first, not sure if that can badger them but it helped.

May well give that a go, just odd that it runs on the Cold Start Injector, albeit briefly.

Q. What have you changed ?

For instance your timing could be 180 degrees out - remember it's a 4 stroke..

Someone mentioned elsewhere they had the fuel lines round the wrong way - check these.

I always like mentioning the engine temperature sensor - try measuring from the contacts at the ECU end to make sure the circuit is OK - if it's open circuit then the engine will run far too rich and not run.

Are the plugs dry or soaking wet?

Also - try cranking it and disconnect the fuel pump as it fires, this is a good and quick way to diagnose over-fuelling.

You say that the injectors are working. Are you sure they are ALL clicking? This was Uglymugs problem as sorted by Wedg1e.(only 2 were actually clicking)

Agree with looking at the temperature sensor: if it senses very cold the coldstart injector will work. With current outside temperatures it should not work at all.....
And I had a problem that sounds like yours, and it was the temperature sensor. If necessary you can short cut the leads to the sensor to simulate a hot engine.

Good luck,

Rob

Yep definately check the temp sensor but don't get confused with the thermotime switch (it's this that controls the cold start injector not the temp sensor).
But then I could be wrong

Dunno if you got my mail, but are you sure you're getting a trigger pulse to the ECU from the ignition amplifier? That would kill it straight away...

Ian

Got your mail thanks, tried a new ignition amplifier, need to re check the wiring.

Going round and round in circles.

Hmmm... that would be a steering problem as well, then?

Very good.....that's all I need, more problems

Andy390 has lent me a Decade Resistor to substitute for the temperature sensor, so I'm going to try that tonight as well as checking the wiring back to the ECU again. :Fingerscrossed:

At last music to my ears, she's running again. I've missed that sound...

Wedgie:

It was indeed the wire from the coil to the ECU Just got to find where.

You'll be really p1553D off when you realise you mixed the chassis' up and put the old one back in....

The old chassis IS back in, need to get the new one stripped still. Made do with welding the old one, couldn't risk not getting it on the road for lemans. So the whole process starts again in 6 months.
