Hi, would like a 4x4 workhorse for the dogs and the weapon of choice in the area seem to be Freelander's. . . I'm not a mechanic in any way so don't know what model is better than the other, can anyone help or even suggest a better 4x4 workhorse?

Stick to Japanese. Mitsubishi, Toyota or Subaru. If you can, get a Land Cruiser, you won’t regret it.
