Following my passing out on a girl on the bank holiday weekend, things go from bad to worse. Last weekend we go out to dinner at a friend's, end up in a local bar, pretty far gone. My best (girl) friend is a legend - we have known each other for 12 years. She's beautiful, funny, cool and lovely. Have never thought of her in that way though.

So of course we end up pulling.

In front of the girl that I am actually quite interested in.

Also, pulling best friend has resulted in me thinking of her in a slightly different way and this must be stopped immediately.

You couldn't make this stuff up. I don't know what the hell is wrong with me at the moment. Dear god.

Laying off the sauce for a while.

In my experience this may have been a happy accident.

1. Some of the best and most enduring relationships I have known have been with girls who have started out as "friends" (I'm not just speaking about my own personal experiences - several friends have found wives like this). Enjoying somebody's company and sharing similar social habits is a large percentage of the battle.

2. The intended girl is likely to step up her efforts in the knowledge that you are attractive to other women and that she has a fight on her hands.

Probably a good idea, but then a lot of great relationships have started out as friendships.

Oh no - I forgot important piece of the mess. Intended girl knows best friend. Well.

I'm screwed.

Indeed - "I was just your average handyman, but when I was called out to a young vixen's place to do a couple of jobs, little did I know. After putting some shelves up I asked if she'd mind holding my large tool while I had a quick rummage in her toolbox and attend to her plumbing, and next thing I knew..."

Don't worry about the dating thing - I had a couple of dates which, usually after remembering parts of the evening after waking up with a hangover, had me making serious enquiries at the Foreign Legion recruitment office.

Whats wrong with this? You know her, get on well, presumably have similar interests etc, know each others foibles etc. Should be the start of a long happy relationship.

Time for a bit of honesty... She probably is as confused as you right now. If she's as nice as you say she is, she's probably *the* one for you.

I bet asking the same thing right now on www.chicksthatdigcars.com

Life partners should be a friend first and then whatever else is merely the cherry on the cake

Go for it!

oh dude that is seriously funny! poor bugger!

on the other hand, if she's as you describe.. well it can't have been an unpleasant experience I guess

and also, as M.A.M said the one you really like may step up her efforts to nail you - and she's almost certainly learned to keep you away from beer!

do you know why i hate you bliarout? cos i knew that link would be false, and yet i clicked it any way. damndamndamn.

flashman, sorry mate, you're screwed. or at least, not screwed. depending on your luck

I'm assuming theres a reason why you've never got it together with #1 gal-pal before? if not, then ask yourself why not? if there is a reason why not, then quickquickquick make a joke of it and make sure you don't lose a great Friend over a drunken snog.

and if theres no reason you're not together already, then get together already. sounds like you'd be great together and make each other happy. or are you waiting for more than that? clue: there IS no more than that. well, apart from porn and monster-munch crisps

or, does she make a lot of noise eating cereal? cos i hate that, dunno about you
