Does anyone go to the cinema or similar by themselves?

My sister recently got a ticket to a comedy gig but can't go now and has said I can have the ticket. It's Dave Gorman who I find funny, but never actually gone to something like that by myself!

I'm actually thinking the cinema by yourself during the day when it's quiet could be quite good!

I would do it as well as the pub but it still feels a little strange even though you don't need people to have a pint or watch a movie.

Oh get on with it, with working away over the years I got comfortable with my own company, quite happy doing stuff.

If you dont take opportunities you miss stuff and to be honest, you meet people and make friends anyway.

I quite enjoy doing things by myself. I've done loads of things solo over the years, especially when I've been travelling on business by myself. But... I have to say that comedy is something I find more enjoyable if someone else is enjoying the laugh with me (and talking about it afterwards).

I'd still go though!

This is now my preferred way to go to the cinema. I still go with others at busy times but it's so much better during the day when it's quieter, people eat less smelly food and I'm awake enough to really enjoy the film.

Having travelled a bit for work I got used to eating by myself so now I don't worry about it.

I've never been to a concert or comedy gig by myself but I would if I wanted but I'm not bothered about going to either generally.

Pub? Local is fine, there's aways someone you'll know. Up town? Sad.

I remember going to see the first Star Wars re-boot when it came out alone (Phantom Menace?) as we'd got back off holiday and my GF at the time had to be back in work. I quite enjoyed it actually, first and only time I've ever done it. She thought it was weird though.

I've often thought about doing a road trip by myself for a few years now but without a mate (usually my best mate and I do them together) along I honestly think I'd miss the family too much.

Cinema or gig? Sure, just go. Everyone is watching the screen/stage; the audience don't matter.

Deffo, go for it.

Like many mentioned already I travel a lot on business and regularly seek out stuff to do/see.

Few weeks ago was in Hamburg and got a ticket to see St.Pauli which was fkin mental. Got talking or some guys in the ground and then dragged (not exactly kicking and screaming) round a load of bars with them after the match.

Went to watch Biffy Clyro Unplugged on my own last month. Wife’s not a fan and I didn’t want to miss it.

Been to the cinema many times to watch stuff that I want to watch and know that she, nor my mates would care to see.

I genuinely don’t see the issue. My mother in law thinks it’s mental though to do stuff on your own...

My Mrs doesn’t like films so I go to the cinema alone. Always go during the first screening, usually less than half a dozen other people in.

Best time to go in my opinion.

I did exactly the same with Athletic Bilbao. Awesome fun.

OP as others have said when travelling for work a lot I’ve gotten used to eating alone. But 3 courses dinners and a book gets boring very quickly! I’ve regularly sought out stuff to do alone. Cinema and a bag of pick and mix being one of my favourites! hehe

Go for it

There’s something strangely cathartic about going off and doing something on your own that is usually done as part of a group or with a partner.

When I was at school I used to sneak out at night and go to dodgy gigs in Soho. No one else liked the type of music I liked back then and the risk of getting busted was dramatically lower if you were on your own.

30 years on I will, if I wake up too early on a Saturday or Sunday morning, sneak out from the family and go and have breakfast at a hotel in Town and revel in the tranquility of being in the midst of a huddle and bustle but not involved in any way.

Strangely, I consider going to the cinema, in the daytime, on your own the act of a psychopath or pervert. But that is probably a result of growing up nearish to Soho. biggrin

Been doing this for years, having been to a few new towns with work and finding few people in my new town interested in the hobbies from my old. Sometimes you look a bit odd, but the alternative is not to do something you want to from fear of strangers' opinions, so it's a bit of a no-brainer.

I went to see Yes guitarist Steve Howe at Tavistock Wharf a few years ago. Couldn't convince the wife to go and had second thoughts but it turned out to be a great experience to see a musician of that calibre up close.

Pub, no; gig, yes; club, yes; car event, yes.

I really wanted to go and see Linkin Park last year, as not seen them before, but no one to go with, so didn't.
The lead singer, Chester Bennington committed suicide shortly after. RIP.
Something I'll never be able to do.

I've been thinking the same recently. I've always been good with money, but I never got to see Bowie, where my broke barman friend has seen him three times. My Dad had the chance to See Queen at Wembley but thought the tickets were too expensive (I'm sure they were in the 80's), so he missed out. I remember teasing a woman I worked with about hitting retirement age- her retort was that she'd seen Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and Queen live and pitied the younger generation! laugh

Prince is dead, Michael Jackson is dead, Chris Cornell is dead, Chuck Berry is dead, Jerry Donahue has had a stroke and will probably never gig again.

Now I'm starting to think about Jeff Lynne, Iron Maiden, etc. So many gigs I've put off due to the (often piss-take) price/inconvenience, but if not now, then when?

Although not a fan, I went with a friend to see Motorhead a few years ago, as he was going on his own. They were fking excellent. We stopped off in Camden Town on the way home and went clubbing smile

Now Lemmy is gone, as is my friend frown but I have something to remember.

I do most stuff on my own and most of the time I don't tell anyone what I'm up to as I don't want the company.

Spending all night drinking in a pub on one's own would be a little odd but I don't drink any more.

Any type of performance, what do you need company for?

For me if it’s something I want to do I really don’t care what other people think. I just go and do it.

Sure sometimes going as part of a group can be more fun but I wouldn’t miss an activity I wanted to do just because I don’t have a mate to go or if/when I was single.

The people that say it’s sad... that’s more a reflection of their own insecurities. I really couldn’t care less what others would think I would just enjoy the gig/meal/theatre/etc.
