On paper the C63 looked my perfect next family car, space to cart kids and all their stuff about plus a nice big V8. I've just spent an hour driving a low milage 2013 car, and although it excels at the comfy cruising it didn't have any wow factor.

A combination of the lazy auto (even in S+ or M) plus the extra weight meant it felt barely any faster than my Leon cupra 290, a handy airfield allowed plenty of 40-130 acceleration and it was ...ok. Brakes were really weak in comparison to the cupra. Handling was surprisingly good. Engine sounded ok, way too quiet with the standard exhaust though!

Overall, it just wasn't exciting enough to make the move from hassle free hot hatch lease to out of warranty premium marquee with all the potential costs that entails.

So, what else is out there with lots of cylinders and a real punch in the back up to 100mph? Up to 30k budget for something reliable, obviously less if I need to keep hold of a war chest for repairs! How about something older, remapped e55k for example? RS4? Rs6 looks to be a complete liability, I don't think I can afford to buy a nice one and keep on top of running costs.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Remap the C63 & you're up to E63 power levels I agree the exhaust is muted but an X pipe fixes this for not a lot of money, also look for the Performance Pack models.

If you go for an E63 then look for a BiTurbo as you may find the N/A unit underwhelming (I've driven a few 300 Cupras & never found their performance comparable) plus 700bhp isn't far away.
