Popped down to village to collect breakfast this morning and saw this baby outside the boulangerie - a later Famialle six-light model; possibly a 15CV-6. Take away the banner and the plastic table & chair and the picture could have been taken sixty or seventy years ago

Always fancied a Traction Avant, nearly bought one a few years ago but had the MGA the chap was selling instead.

Vauxhall VX 4/90 behind the Citroen, looks like a Mini Countryman behind the Rover, would be my guess.

I think it's a Rover P6 parked facing away from the P5. Look at the slope of the roof and the thick, raked C pillar

The boot extended bootlid of this car means it's a post '52 but I think not much later, as the '55 cars got box section bumpers. Production ended in '57 so this car was already nearly 20 years into its production life when it was new.

You could be right - I was looking at it 180 degrees differently.

Such a French approach to big cars, that. The 11CV Commerciale cost 780,000 Old Francs in 1955, which was about 30% more than Simca Aronde and about 50% more than a Peugeot 403. It was priced at about the same relative value as a Wolseley 6/90 or Ford Zephyr in the UK. But the T/A Commerciale was explicitly designed for the sort of load-lugging in that picture. It was aimed at farmers, tradesmen and salesmen to use as a van. There was an advert that made a big show of how, because of the flat floor afforded by the FWD, the T/A was great at transporting sheep. I can just about remember going on family holidays to France in the late 1980s/early 90s and down in the deep south you'd still occasionally see a late Traction Avant bobbing around with bald tyres, crazed paintwork and surface rust, opaque selective-yellow headlamp lenses and every panel with a dent or crease. They were usually kept in a shed at the back of the local garage or tractor dealer as spot-hire cars, field vans or work hacks.

It's a very Gallic thing, the big, expensive, very well-engineered, stylish but strangely utilitarian car. The Citroen ID (taxi extraordinare and with special trim levels for different ranks of civil service bureaucrat) is the best, but the Peugeot 404/504/605 represent it very well too, along with the likes of the Renault 16 and Simca Vedette.
