Hi
Just after some advice from experienced car modders and mechanics on remapping my BMW 1 series 118i M Sport Shadow Edition.

Purchased brand new in Sept i absolutely love it, but find it a little under powered having gone from a 208 GTI to this. Its the 1.5, 136bhp 3 cylinder lump.

Someone mentioned a remap and the numbers look really good in terms of gains and torque, however i want to make sure that what i am doing isn't going to cause any mechanical issues with the car or put increased pressure on the engine. Can the engine take this increase in power? Will there be any long term issues or will the 1.5 engine be more than happy to take the remap. The car i feel is set up for more power with bigger brakes, calipers and suspension.

Thanks in advance!!

Phill

Sorry to come across all negative but you went from a quick & (relatively) light fairly warm hatch to a heavier less powerful car.

Were you surprised that it was slower?

The gains aren't actually huge & while it will be noticeable it is barely going to half the difference in 0 - 60 time and will invalidate your warranty & insurance.

Yeah risky with a brand new car and warranty issues.

Plus the lowest output engine remapped is still gonna be a low output engine, with as you say a setup/gears/brakes for a low output.

That’s not to say don’t remap etc, but usually you’d work off a model closer to where you want to be.
Or you’d buy a car know to remap well and consider that in buying process (like buying one just out of warranty)

You’ve a long way to go to get closer to 208GTi bhp/tonne performance.

I know you just bought it new, was there any reason you needed this model specifically (insurance? Needed a new car, bigger car, economy?)

Yea i know im a long way from the GTI, but it came to the end of my deal and i needed a new car. Wanted something bigger, but still sporty and the BMW was the right money and looks great with loads of kit on. I knew it wouldn't be anywhere near as quick and dont particularly have a problem with it as its lovely to drive, however someone mentioned remap and i saw that it'll take the BHP from 136 to 220 and improve the torque greatly.

I just wanted to weigh up advice on whether it would be worthwhile and beneficial or I'd be hit with problems

No chance of a 90bhp increase

I think you might have been looking at the old 118i which was a defined Mini Cooper s engine with 170 bhp which with a remap sounds realistic

Yours is the newer 3 pot where they re-aligned the model numbers and made the 118i the 120i then put a smaller powered engine as the 118i

Just going off what the figures online tell me using my reg and model number. All quoting that increase. Im aware that the engine currently in mine is the 3 cylinder one thats also used in the mini cooper and ive read about the older engine too in previous models. The new figures for the 118i is 136bhp and the 120i is now 194 bhp i believe and there is only a second difference in 0-60 times.

I did think the quoted increases were high, but consistent across the board with all remapping companies.

Celtic Tuning, as an example, are showing:

Power (bhp) 134 > 175 = +41
Torque (lb/ft) 162 > 202 = +40

Never in 1,000,000 years would that be possible without different intercooler, meth injection, bigger turbo, bigger injectors & even then the engine would last 6 months if you are lucky.

Hey Phil?
Did you get the 118i remapped?
Any thoughts?
I have a 318i with same engine. Just looking for a bit more flexibility and easier overtaking rather than out and out performance.
Superchips remap quotes decent improvement in bhp + nm.

Cheers

Had a stage 1 remap done to my bmw 114i.

Car was stock when I did it and now sits at:

216bhp
292 nm max torque @2672 RPM

Print out is on my Insta page @mottyf20 if you want to see it for yourself.

Done by Dervtech in Manchester.

Well worth the money mate and the difference is unreal.

I've owned a Subaru Impreza Hawkeye WRX and a Civic Type R EP3 and this BMW is well up there with them now.
