Hi chaps. Just wanted to own up to what I have done and warn you lot about my experience.

In a sheer moment of Chavness I popped down to the local auto store and got a tin of Folatec tint spray. Masked off the units well and commenced spraying.

Unfortunatly the spray comes out like a jet and is so tight that its really hard to get to go on without running.

Basically I totally ballsed it up and now they look dark and ok from a distance but a little rubbish close up.

I am thinking about afterburners now, or possibly buying another set of mondeo lights and trying to tint them correctally.
That option would cost £30 and look pretty good. The afterburners are £615 inc vat and fitting at V-tune.

Not sure what to do, as it is a lot of cash really.

Your comments please, but please be gentle!!

Did you take them off to spray them? I'm wondering if they weren't properly clean before you started?

Also I'd have been tempted to mask off the white reverse light/reflector to stop it looking so chav. I'd have then just used red tint to remove the orange indicators. Someone mocked that up on here last year and it looked good.

You can remove the tint with cellulose thinners, but I'd take them off the car first as I doubt they'd do much for the cars bodywork/paint.

Think I'm going to go for the afterburners. Easier option IMO.

But a little pricey at £615

There is a chap here who does a pro job at tinting and will do them to your own spec.

Looks pretty neat.

I did them in sutu but did clean them first with petrol too.

It was the nozzle that caused it to mess up, its such a fine spray that its really hard to gat a fine mist to go over them. I was holdong the can about 15-20 inches away and the spray hitting the surface was about the size of a golf ball. Tricky.

Did this to my motorbike when I was at college. The solution is to buy a pot of paint (or decant the spray can into a jar), thin it and then use an airbrush. It knackers the air brush but gives a beautiful finish.
Or just buy the afterburners.
Did anyone say GROUP BUY?

Do you think a group buy would actually work when they all need a 2 day fitting job?

Good plan on the airbrush thing. Thinking about that. Do you have to just spray it all out into a jar or pop the can?

I could try the cellulose thinners to get it all off and then start again with the air brush idea.

How simple is it to get the rear lights out?

Anyone?

We might not save money on the fitting but the units themselves are 2/3 of the cost, so we should be able to save something.
Yeah, you can just spray the paint out if you want. You may need to experiment a little with the amount of thinners vs paint as well.
As for getting them off, I think it's just a couple of bolts once you've removed the rear panels. Mind they don't fall onto the floor, though, ocne you undo them.

Just found a pair of new ones on ebay. Think I may give it another go first.

Do you think I should spray a clear lacqer over them once sprayed and if so, what type?

Thanks for help.

Greg,

Take them out and wipe them over with cell thinners. That will remove the tint and shouldn't damage the plastic providing you do it quickly.

Best Regards
Matt
