1987 Porsche 944

Went out to trade the car in on a Touareg or XC90 for visiting family. Went and saw this as a left field option and fell instantly in love. Bigger wheels at the back, whale tail and pop up headlights. My dream car.

Yep bought it the same day. Cam belt history is uncertain so I am trying to limit the driving for now until that is done. I have some small Martini Stickers ordered. One is going on the back but I can't decide where on the side the others should go. Maybe just the rear quarter window. Suggestions welcome.

Love the old 944’s. It looks like it has the 16” turbo teledial wheels on it, they were wider at the rear. Have a look under the sill covers for any rust and check the torsion tube mounts at the rear.

Absolutely love it, the Porsche transaxle cars seem to a bit left field for alot on PH however i love them, very underrated, well balanced and for a car from the 80's properly engineered and unlike alot of cars from the 80's it will work.

When you do the belts you may as well do all of the roller bearings too whilst your in there.

I've got a 924S, same mechanicals as your car but the narrow body, i've done a bit to mine though.

Thanks for the comments everyone. The only downside to the car is that it is an auto. However I was planning to use it for leisurely cruises with the boy not outright racing so it will do as an intro to the marque. Here are a few more pictures.

And yes they are wider in the rear. It passes the 80s schoolboy test: the wheels; the whale tail and the pop up headlights. I think every car I draw as a lad had those three things!

P.s. I almost bought a 924 recently. Seriously underrated in my opinion and yes I am going to change the rollers. It was supposed to be going in tomorrow for the cambelt but one of the tensioners is on back order so it will be another week! Grrrrrr

You've got an interesting mix of body panels on it, looks like the early Turbo wheels with a Turbo / S2 front bumper but an early rear lower valence.

Love the interior shot, Burgandy is a proper 80's Porsche trim colour and the auto will be ideal for for cruising around.

Small world - mate of mine who's recently moved out to NZ emailed me about this very car in mid-Sept (stemmed from the usual conversations about what interesting kit might be available prior to him leaving the UK).

If I've understood this correctly, you went to trade in your car for a large family estate of 4x4 type affair, and returned with an 80's auto Porsche.

It looks like someone has had turbo stickers on it at some point which is pretty lame.

I think it probably should be called "the bean".

Yes the atmosphere in the car was pretty frosty on the journey home. Surprisingly, there was not a lot of interest in the weight distribution or suspension setup.

So far my pennance has been 2 sets of expensive concert tickets but I am not expecting to see the light at the end of the tunnel any time soon.

My man maths justification also means that we will be swapping the merc for a 7 seater this weekend. I refuse to call it a people mover because it has a bonnet and no sliding doors. Don't anyone correct me, it is working for now but won't stand scrutiny.

Update:


It is in the process of getting timing belt change and the parts I have ordered don't fit!

The belt taken off ( 94410515704) is different from the new one I have bought in the kit and which doesn't fit. From what I can see the engine changed in 07/87 and so I must have been unlucky enough to choose the wrong side of the model divide.I think (and hope) some of the idlers etc I also got are interchangable so hopefuly I already have some of the bits I need.

On the kind of plus side the belt was starting to crack so it was the right decision to take tin.

Parts are much more expensive here in NZ than Europe or the US so if it is just the belt I will suck it up and pay it. If there are changes to rollers/tensioners and such I will make an order online and send the other stuff back.

In other news the drivers window stopped working this am. Another job to add to the list.
