I instructed my developer to go through this lot on my Wordpress site.

It helped.

Improving Page Loading Speed

1. Image compresstg
2. Optimize php + mysql for improve first time byte
3. Add gzip for compress static files css and js for decrease number loading files
4. Enable cache in browser
5. Usage of Image sprites to make images load fast
6. Check the existing code and remove the unused/extra code i.e Optimization of code.
7. Check the installed extensions and modules, eliminate the ones which are not required.
8. Compress the JavaScript part as this is the major factor which causes slow loading of website.
9. Uplinks reductions
10. Minimise redirects
11. Correcting image code
12. Page render latency, currently the site takes over 5 seconds to load the first byte. (http://www.webpagetest.org/result/140808_XS_GFV/)
13. Combine CSS and scripts to reduce the overall number of server requests per page view.
14. Configure server caching and expire dates for static content.
15. Test to validate changes and calculate performance gains
