I'm looking at a 2010 Volkswagen GTI with 110000 Mileage on the clock, Already has aftermarket alloys (19) and lowering springs.
Website says its has full service history and change of timing chain. I haven't seen the car personally, Its on 7.5k atm

also looking at one
2010 GTI with 87000 miles on it.. 9k
fully stock.

what should i be worried about high mileage, and what should i look out for when i go see the car.
the 110k miles one is catching my eyes with the aftermarket stuff, but the miles on it is putting me off.
never had experience on buying high mileage cars always bought below 50k

Possibility that the high mileage one was enthusiast owned? Plus chain has been replaced and them 2.0 TSI engines especially the earlier ones had issues with the chain drive system. I’ve also read of problems with high oil consumption.

The Mk6 is just a heavy facelift of the Mk5. The underpinnings are the same. For that kind of money you could buy a low mileage late Mk5 GTI or an Edition 30.

Make sure the tensioner is the latest revision - First was 2011 then there were two in 2012. My GTI is a 2011 build which has been fine upto 84k but for confidence I wouldn’t buy another without the latest tensioner update. My intake manifold needed changing a few months ago which is apparently a common issue, so I’d check that. If it’s DSG make sure it’s had the oil and filter change at 40k and 80k.

I've got a 2010 mk6 golf gti (pretty basic spec), had it 4 years, taken it from 35k to 105k in this time and had no real major issues with the car.

outwith normal servicing (every 10k at main dealer or indi specialist) I've needed:

discs and 2x pads (front) all round. recently I needed both rear calipers replaced due to binding brakes, but I use this car in all weathers (driving on very salty roads skiing/ canoeing in winter) and the car is parked on the street, so its kinda to be expected.

snapped rear suspension spring, then this weekend snapped front suspension spring and rusted top mount. again conditions i regularly drive in plus living in edinburgh with cobbled streets every where, its gonna happen.

a wiring issue with the ignition switch that randomly caused the radio to keep cutting out.

I have absolutely loved this car, and its been (touch wood) pretty trouble free. its getting to the age where some more age/ rust/ condition related issues might start to creep up, but again this is probably more a symptom of my use than car related.

but the mk6 still looks good, still plenty fast for fun as/when you need/ want it. will return 350-400miles out of a £60 tank all day long. no plans to change mine yet.

I was looking at Mk5/6 GTis recently as a short term runaround, but ended up with a MkV R32. 125k miles but FSH, new decent tyres and brakes and drives like new! It's a really lovely engine and from my research, seemed to have less known issues than the GTi lump. Road tax is the only fly in the ointment at £530 a year, but that's only £200 more than the GTi so no biggie.
