Long time since I posted on here but after a little bit of advice. I’m almost settled on getting an Octavia VRs as it just about covers all my requirements however I’m undecided between petrol or diesel.
The car will mainly be used on my fairly short commute with the odd longer journey thrown in. The commute is 13 miles each way with about half on dual carriageway and the rest stop/start through town. A couple of friends have the diesel version but their commute is mainly motorway.
Is it worthwhile getting the diesel or sticking with my preferred choice of petrol? Looking at used cars from 2010 onwards.

For that commute definitely petrol. FYI I have just returned my 2016 Octavia VRS estate. It was a diesel. I covered 21,095 mile in 2 years from new. Average MPG over the 2 years was 44.2MPG. Car was mainly used for <20mile commute however it did do several long (800 mile+) journeys whilst I had it. Best I ever seen was 55mpg. The Diesel engine is not economical enough to justify it over the petrol IMO. I would most certainly go for petrol if I was to buy another.

What were you expecting from the diesel? On a relatively sub optimal duty cycle like yours I’d be surprised if the petrol VRS would click much more than 30mpg. It equates to quite a saving over the lifetime of the vehicle which I presume is of interest to the typical Skoda buyer who masquerade as “smart”, whilst everyone else thinks they are cheap.

I do a similar commute and I wouldn't buy anything other than petrol.

Had a diesel company car before opting out of the scheme and I only saw around 2mpg difference on the same run between similar cars.

Ultimately though it depends on your preference of how the car drives. Personally I prefer petrol but I can understand if you prefer the torque of a diesel.

Totally agree, around town I wouldn't expect much better. However on a 130mile constant run with cruise set to 73 I did expect better than 45mpg. I've now got a diesel Alfa Guilietta with similar performance and on the same journey I'm seeing closer to 60mpg.

I'm not knocking the Skoda, I loved mine. I just don't think the diesel engine's economy massively surpasses the petrol's.
