Well as it was advertised at £4K I had to enquire!
https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

It sounded too good to be true so my expectations where low. I received a response to my enquiry last night and another within minutes of replying tonight.

Hello,

If you're interested in buying my TVR Chimaera, can be yours for only 4000£. I made this discount in order to speed up the selling process and to avoid any unnecessary negotiations.
It would be no exaggeration to say that this is a practically new car! No accidents, No mechanical, NO cosmetic flaws, the pictures accurately represent the current state of the vehicle.
- For more detailed information about the overall condition, please see attached photos below.

Thanks for your interest, hope to hear from you soon

A whole host of pics where included. Next reply

I'm currently on a business trip and I don't know if I'll be able to get home this week. And for this reason I've already placed the car in shipping company custody with the empowerment to handle the transportation process on my behalf.
If we agree on this deal, I'm offering to deliver the car to your location with the possibility to conduct your own pre-acquisition inspection, before any money changes hands. Delivery takes approximately 1-3 working days, shipping and handling charges are included in the selling price.

I hope you will find this proposal satisfactory and look forward to explain in more detail the acquisition process.
Luan

I checked out the MOT history and it is consistent with the advert description. Having read scams before my gut reaction is a scam but what I don't yet understand is if no money changes hands until you are satisfied how does it work. Maybe the next email reply would tell me?

Cheers Jack

The next step will be you posting to say you have been scammed out of £4k.

I think you'll be asked to deposit the money with a "holding company" who will release it to the vendor when you're satisfied with the car (or possibly two minutes after you've deposited it) biggrin

I could be wrong, take it to level 3!

These scams are never about you paying the price of the car in advance- no one falls for that, instead you will be asked to pay some other type of shipping or handling fee in advance.

My advice is don't engage with them.

You know it's a scam and nothing good can come of it.

If they're daft enough to think they get that car for £4000 they're daft enough to fall for anything laugh

You are probably right but I don't mind wasting their time as they are happy to waste mine. At the end of the day on line sites are full of scammers and when I have done this in the past I have reported it to a Fraud website. So nothing mmay come of it but it may provide sufficient information to hep form a picture about some of these peoples activities which potentially could lead to a prosecution.

So if I can help stop some scumbag taking somebody's hard earned cash I am happy.

Cheers Jack

So I got a reply.

If you wish to buy my car, the selling process has to follow the purchasing guidelines set forth below;

After the vehicle's arrival, you'll be entitled to a 10-day inspection period permitted through the Safe Exchange policy provided by the eBay Guarantee. In simple terms, they're acting as a neutral third-party, who will handle everything on our behalf. (WHICH INCLUDES: authorize/delegate the shipping company for further activities, documents transfer, and it's also used to intermediate the financial part of this purchase.)
If you wish to complete the acquisition in accordance with above-mentioned terms, just provide the following information:
- Your Complete Name, Delivery Address and Phone Number (requested information will be used used to draft the transport & sale agreement)

After this step, you will be registered as buyer and eBay will send you the purchase invoice with detailed information to help guide you through.

It's not to do with time, it's to do with security.

The people that do this are criminals, it sounds obvious but do you honestly want to talk to criminals or does it just feel a little safer because it's via email?

There's the IT angle, you're emailing, that means documents, links, all kinds of potential for bad things to happen.

When enough people are telling you something you may want to listen - walk away now.

Ok - fair points.

Link to the advert still working.

I use ebay for vehicles a lot. They do NOT act as handlers in any way whatsoever. Any purchase arrangement is between the buyer and seller only.

They do not have a "Safe Exchange policy provided by the eBay Guarantee." It's jibberish, and a scam.

It is now but didn't earlier. Maybe an IT issue my end.

This is the reply I received when I asked why I needed an Ebay account:

Yes the car was advertised on eBay and PistonHeads... but, I don't actually see a problem with this practice. I consider this a normal thing, for me as a seller is very important to post/advertise my car on different websites, this will help me attract more potential buyers and I can sell my car faster.
The car was listed on eBay, but there is no need to re-post the item again with Buy It Now, because eBay clearly indicate in their terms that if the higher bidder didn't honor his obligations, the seller has the right to bring other potential-buyer from an exterior platform with the condition that any further transaction should be conducted through their safe exchange policy. This practice is quite common these days, once you're registered eBay will take-over the process and you'll receive complete guidance.
In order to be eligible for eBay's Buyer Protection Program I just need your eBay ID, NAME and SHIPPING DETAILS. The information provided will be used to register you as my buyer, after that eBay will send you an invoice with detailed information to help guide you through.

So that is how the scam works and along with myself I hope that who ever else has read this thread this wont be a victim!

I had seen something like that in the past, the vendor gave me a web link to a DHL site (in fact a very well done copy of a DHL site).
The process was that I sent all the amount of cash to "DHL", then they were delivering the car, and if I were unhappy, they took back the vehicle and send me back the money.
The price of the car was not so low as this Chimaera, so not so suspect, but of course, as I know that <SPOIL> Santa Claus doesn't exist </SPOIL>, the delivery process was unrealistic.
But, they have done a well done web site and so I guess that even if you find 1 stupid buyer every 100 adverts, it's a bargain.

Not as quickly as they removed my ad for accusing me of being a trader, that was pulled down within 20 minutes. Absolute nonsense.
