Way back when, kids used to make up baggy body from stuffed clothes, put a wig and a scary mask on it and then prop it in a wheelbarrow. Passing strangers were then invited to donate their small change to the urchins in honest appreciation of the misshapen catholic conspirator before he met his grizzly end on the 5th Nov.
Does this still go on anywhere in the country? Not seen any down here in South East London.

Wasn't it banned for being misogynistic?

Or maybe it was something to do with equal pay?

I saw one last year outside a Morrison’s in Newcastle. Not seen one this year though but it’s a tad early for bonfire night I’d say

We have one outside our local Aldi and also a charity asking for cash in the exit.

Would've thought the kids would have been moved on.

The modern version is called 'tenner for the mandem" and usually involves knives. HTH.

Wow, that's a great effort. For us, it was sticking a football on top of a pillow.

Did you wonder why nobody gave you any money?

Actually, it was tradition in those days to stick the 'Guy' you'd used to collect the firework money on the top of a big bonfire you'd have as part of the celebration.

I'd have thought the football/pillow combo would give have been a bit smokey and smelly?

Ah yes that form of begging seems to have gone by the wayside. All about Halloween / Trick or Treat these days thanks to our American friends.

I swear there was a case where a teen was dressed as a guy and someone stabbed him not realising the guy was, in fact, a real person. And it all went downhill from there?

I vaguely remember something along those lines but I think it was more like they got mugged for the money they collected and the perp used that as his excuse.
I also remember it happening somewhere like Peckham.
