Can anyone explain to me what BMW (normally among my favourite people) are trying to do here?

EVO ask, can the new M850i take on the S-Class Coupe and Porsche 911? Er, no, and no.

Surely if you want a car like this you would buy an M6? What can this do which an M6 can't? Plus, beyond the fact that they have taken an M4 and inflated it a bit, with the additional bits and that front end, it is authentically, horrifically ugly.

Build a new car and sell it to some people? Wild guess...

I'm actually hoping the 8 will be better than the S Class Coupe. Was very disappointed earlier this year when I was looking at getting a S63 Coupe. Interior was great (apart from the stupid twin ipads) and it was a VERY pretty car, but the drive was shocking. To the point where I drove a second because I'd convinced myself something was wrong with the dealers demonstrator. I'd say the 911 is for a different market really, not so much a grand tourer. Either way the 8 and the S Class will both hemorrhage money from new so I'll be getting one at least 18 mths old if I go for one. 6 series (even the M6) wouldn't cut it against a S Class in terms of refinement, luxury, prestige etc. Now BMW have something to compete directly. Interested to see how the X7 fairs against the RR. Now that will be interesting

I just don't see it, and though I keep getting emails from BMW suggesting that I test drive it, there is no reply address to allow me to tell them that i don't want an oversized, poorly handling big sports coupe, particularly one which I think is brutally ugly. Now they are doing it with the new Z4. Another ugly overweight cruiser.

EVO's view:-

How do I communicate to them to start producing desirable cars? Who at BMW is doing this?

Think it’s a case of each to his own here! I was lucky enough to see the 8 series months ago at a preview event and loved it. And I’ve now got a new Z4 on order as I prefer the size.

I really like their latest direction, sharp and dynamic styling with high tech interiors. Enough to sway me back from Audi. Found the F-chassis BMWs just a tiny bit lacklustre.

Just to let you know - this is now the 6 series. BMW have made it even more upmarket and premium over the previous 6 series. The only 6 series left is the 6 series GT, which actually is the replacement for the 5 series GT. The M8, which is coming, will be replacing the M6, and will cost much more than the £95K that the M6 was. Matter of fact, the 8 series starts at £73k, which is much more than the £60k the 6 series started at. This is definitely the car that BMW have designed to take on the GT/Sports car sector that is the S-Class Coupe, and the 911. Audi don't have anything competing in this sector at all, they never really have.

I personally think it is a stunning car with the right dimensions. People slated the E63 6 series as horrible looking, but they only got better over the years, and this is one that looks great now and will fit in much better with the new-age designs of cars coming out today. Certainly fits with the latest designs that BMW have, with the new 5 series, 3 series and X7.

I am also very much looking forward to the X7, it has been seen on the streets in some European countries and they really have got the large SUV right. This will definitely compete with the XC90 and the Range Rover.

The X7 is def. on my radar. Always had a Disco of one guise or another on the drive since I was young, recently been looking to chop in our current one for a RR as really not keen on the look of the latest Disco. Looked at X5's but they always seem a bit low-rent compared to LR. I have a LWB 7 which I love so the X7 might just tempt me away from a Rangey. Looked at Audi/Merc offerings and imo the X7 nails the looks. Maybe in the minority there!

Why don't you go straight in at the top and email one of the Quandt family, they're sure to march straight into a board meeting and demand answers to your questions...

Yes I’m sure.

I’m pleased that the 8 and the Z4 appeal to some people, and maybe I have got this wrong. The 6 GT is another one which I mistakenly believe is an bulbous lumpen heap which dealers are struggling to shift, and I think they are going to lose ground with the latest X5, because the exaggerated grille (for why?) and roof rail design have given it a narrow top heavy look, like the original X3, not the chunky look the car needs. Being brave, modern and new is great, but do you not think that it exposes you to the risk of chasing the next gimmick?

I subscribe to the view that if it looks right it usually is right, and if it doesn’t have appeal on first sight, it never will have. Jaguar were brave with the new XJ, and where has that gone? All electric replacement or maybe complete removal from the range. This is the model which defined the sports saloon in 68.

Autocar tested the Z4 this week, and gave it 4 stars. I would say that their comments were guarded, and Autocar is prone to give every new car the benefit of the doubt. I suppose they have to or they won’t get invited to the launches. To quote, “still a better high day roofless cruiser than true sports car”. And that is with their rose tinted specs on. EVO were rather more frank. On the styling, the rear end looks like three tail designs piled one on top of the other and flattened. It’s a classic case , in my view FWIW, of not being sure what to do and throwing in every fashionable trope in the box. The interior is generic BMW which is good in a 5 but in a sports car, particularly in a cruiser, the effect will be to make you think after 20 minutes or so, that you are driving a BMW saloon. On the 8, please watch the Autogefuhl test. Autogefuhl are I think one of the best YouTube testers, next to Harry’s Garage in my view, and they are always out fast with new models. The tyres are screeching round every bend even at moderate speeds. It’s obvious that the car doesn’t handle worth a damn, and is all electronic control. That, by the way, will mean new run flat tyres every 12,000 miles or so.

I just think it is disappointing for such a great car company, who have done such a brilliant job on other designs. There are not a lot of good options for open sports cars around 50k just now. Porsche have got the awful four cylinder engine, Mercedes just no, F Type is overpriced, heavy and impractical, we are not in a good place.
