Years ago I used to make stuff out of discrete components. Usually stuff that made bangs or sparks etc like these - https://www.rmcybernetics.com/science/diy-devices/... sometimes radio receivers or water overflow alarms, burglar alarms etc

I fancy getting back in to making stuff from components. Any ideas for interesting projects that kids would love to play with ?

Indeed - Arduinos are really good and there are lots of examples. You can buy starter kits which come with a selection of parts that accompany the example code on the development environment.

Have a look on youtube for ESP8266 projects.
These are tiny, cheap processor boards that cost from £2 to about £9.
Programmed via the Arduino IDE.
Can run for a fair while from battery.
