Oil Change: How often?

NOw I thought 6,000 when it was serviced was the norm, but then I've read a couple of posts on here from people who are changing at 3k instead.

Obviously the more often you change, the better for the engine, so what's the majority view!?

3k since the last service so might treat the ol' chap!

There is a theory that it's better to have an engine that uses a bit because then it gets topped up and some of the oil is then renewed with fresh oil and doesn't have the same old stuff sloshing around the oilways for the full 6k or so ...

Hmm.. I reckon a lot of it would depend on how often you use the car... I do 300+ a week but I'm not planning on changing the oil every 10 weeks.. !

The guys who are changing at 3000 are generally using a mineral oil which goes sludgy as soon as the sun hits the bonnet and raises the temp a couple of degrees above zero... If this type of oil is not changed regularly it sludges and this is not good.

You can change the modern synthetic more often but frankly it is a waste of money. It might do the oil companies some good and make you feel better but synthetic oils are designed to go longer periods.

I look at the colour of the oil on the dipstick and if it is starting to discolour, I change it depending on how far away the next service is.

It won't damage the engine unless you screw it up and get zero oil pressure and the oil police won't storm your garage either so it is very much optional.

Thanks Steve, the colour's excellent so it'll be a 6k change then I should think.

These modern oils are brilliant compared to the Wynns me dad used to chuck in his Peugeot 504 in the early 70s.
