Petrol in my engine oil after crashing my motorbike
Discussion
Hi guys, this is actually my first post here so let me know if I'm in the wrong subforum or anything.
Yesterday I was in a bit of an "accident" which resulted in my bike and I scraping down the road at about 25-35mph for about 50 feet. I'm fine according to the doctors.
My bike seemed fine at first. Foot peg snapped off, gear shifter snapped off, indicators broken. Nothing big.
However looking closer and when checking my oil level I noticed that my oil sump is actually full to the brim. Bit confused, I took a sniff, and it reeks of petrol.
It's a 2006 Yamaha YBR 125 (carburetted). I changed the engine oil about a month ago max and all was okay at that time.
What could be causing this? The engine and everything looks pretty much fine from the outside, and it does start. I started it last night and it was a bit coughy, however it was very cold. I'm a bit hesitant to start it again now given the situation.
Shall I just change the oil and hope for the best?
Thanks,
Jamie

If it's been on it's side then the float in the carb probably allowed the contents of the tank to drain down the manifold into the cylinders and then the sump
Don't run the engine before changing the oil
Probably be ok after that. Worth checking the carb hasn't taken a bad knock

I was thinking it might be something like that. I'll change the oil, check the carb, and hope for the best.
Thanks

Wot e said but I'll add if the bore has been flooded with petrol then it would be a good idea to remove the spark plug, squirt some engine oil down there. Spin it over a few times with the plug out. Put the plug back in. Change the engine oil and only then start it up. You shouldn't really have started it up with bone dry bores that had been petrol washed and a sump full of petrol. Silly boy.
