I'm definately in need of a new TV as I'm realizing my current one (owned 10yrs) can't produce dark pictures well). I really don't know where to begin with TVs as there are so many on the market now compared to when I bought mine. i did make a tentative thread back in feb

My criteria is as follows.

Budget £500

This is how much I paid for my TV back then so I'd figure i'd do the same. I may go over by £100 if there's something incredibly special.

Screensize: maxium 40"

My current TV has a screen size of 32", if you include the bezel the overall TV size is 37". This TV is for my bedroom which I sit about 1.5metres away from, so I don't need a TV any bigger than this.

HDMI ports: 2+

1 for my PS4, one for virgin media box. the more the merry. A good old fasion phono/headphone port would be nice so that I can hook this up to my 15yr old hifi.

1080/4K

I don't necessarily need 4k, but I suppose for future proofing I'll consider it.

use

This is going in my bedroom and is mainly for playing PS4. so as mentioned above, I don't need a large TV,

additional notes

I have no need for features like web browsing (i have a laptop and phone for that). It's use will be 90% playing on my PS4, 10% watching TV.
Priority is a good screen, not something packed with features that doesn't improve the overall viewing experience. So stufff like HDR I would like. Wifo or web browsing i don't care so much for.

Hoping you guys can steer me in the right direction.

I don't get the whole 'I sit close, I don't need a big TV,' thing - I sit 1.5m from my 65" TV. It took very little adjustment, looks fantastic and helps with immersion. Gaming on it via a Shield is also a lot of fun and looks incredible. More to the point, my better half who couldn't give a toss about Dolby Vision or pixel count is happy watching it.
I raise this because 55" is becoming the 'standard,' screen size that manufacturers take seriously in terms of performance and features. And because 40" isn't a size that's easily available any more.

I've had a quick look around and can't actually find a TV that small, much less one you can spend £500. The two I'd have a look at are both 43". Check out input lag etc, but reviews seem positive for the former and the latter is the successor to a popular mid-range TV from last year with a good reputation for gaming. Do your own research on them though as I've done almost none:

Thanks for the reply. My only issue with whilst I could get a larger TV in my room it's not a massive room. I don't want to have to wall mount it. I'd probably have to search for a new TV stand/table of some sort that would fit my needs and where I want to place it as the stand i currently have is only big enough for the TV i have now.

I did look around at reviews and for my price point everything seemed to point towards buying the NU7400 samsung you've mentioned, especially for it's low imput lag. My only reservation is it has no normal 3.5mm jack, which is how plug in my stereo to my current TV for listening to music/watching TV off the tv.. but i suppose there's always a work around for that.

THe idea of even building my own TV table/stand is rather appealing, but I have no tools other than a cordless drill. only issue is I need a tv stand that has at least 1 shelf that's tall enough to fit the body of my early 00's mini hifi system.

No idea on the stand front - I know the Ikea Besta unit is something a lot of people into their AV use, but I've no idea how the size etc would meet your needs. And I've wall mounted both my TV's - the old 42" plasma on a £25 cantilever stand from Amazon and the big one on something more substantial.

I'm not trying to keep telling you that you want the opposite of everything you've just said (although this is PH) but would a cheap wall mount for the TV with a floating shelf or wall mount for a centre channel speaker (like this one ) do what you need for the hifi? I only mention it because a cordless drill is all you'd need for both.

Failing that I'd be looking on eBay or FB Market Place for a stand.

The Samsung should have RCA ports so an RCA to 3.5mm or Toslink to 3.5mm should do the job connecting it all up.
