Did I do something wrong?
Discussion
Hi All,
Newish rider here (passed in Feb). Was out today just trying to get more miles and experience under my belt. Sitting in single lane traffic, set of lights on red, I'm about 6 cars back. Nothing coming the other way so I slowly crawl along the white line to the front to the lights. Whilst waiting for the lights to change I notice waiting on the oncoming opposite side an adventure style bike, two up, he isn't at the front of his queue, but about 4 cars back. Lights change and I move off. As I pass him I nod. However instead of nodding back, I get a very dissaproving shake of the head. I'm new to all this, I'm not one for high speeds, knee down or wheelies but what I most enjoy about biking is not having to sit in traffic and just get away from all the queues of cars.
Was what I did out of order and giving bikers a bad name? I'm in my mid 40s but after my actions today should I consider wearing a hoodie, joining the bike life youths and start doing wheelies everywhere?

They think they're king of the f
king road. Even those that don't dress up as police riders still like to act like them.
More than one occasion I've had them trying to direct me to keep behind. b
ks to that, I'll give every biker room and respect, but I'm not waiting a few miles behind slow moving traffic whilst Mr top box w
ker is weighing up whether he has 2 miles of clear road to complete an overtake.

I wouldn't automatically condemn anyone for doing something that may not actually be directed at me.

Did consider this but it was the same for him (could have passed cars RHS) whilst lights were red and only shook his head as I nodded. But hey ho without speaking to him, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. Guess I took it too personally when I’m constantly analysing my own riding.I wouldn't automatically condemn anyone for doing something that may not actually be directed at me.
I wouldn’t worry about it, I do the same.
The only thing I can think of is that I recall my instructor being very keen on enforcing rule 165 of the Highway Code, saying that you should not overtake the front vehicle waiting at a pedestrian crossing (not sure if your junction was a pedestrian crossing).

Jesus, you’ve an ML but like to stereotype others based on their choice of transport?

You’re funny.
Christ James you've actually taken the time to go through my profile to find a stick to beat me with You’re funny.

FYI I bet 99% of blokes with a top box (including you no doubt) has had a w
k at some point in thier lives. The ML lasted a month btw so I will update the profile for your approval

all that nodding business always confused me, but i am London/Home counties biker.
Like all groups of people, some will, some wont, some dick will put orange reflectors on an Pan European and wear a "POLITE" vest.
Some of us are normal, some of us aren't.
I personally see Motorcycling as predominately solo activity, others like to power ranger up and drink tea together.
I aggressively filter, because otherwise whats the point of riding if you want to sit in traffic.
Welcome to the fold, and you will discover your own group.
unless you ride the aforementioned Pan European, then you can FRO!

This thread is about the worst possible advert for motorcycling as either a transport choice or as a fun past time that I've seen in a long time. The sweeping statements, generalisations and open hostility to motorcycle riders that dare to ride particular makes of bike, wear particular clothing, have particular types luggage fitted or who choose to ride slower than others are, at best, disappointing and are, at worst, a perfect example to those who consider that motorcyclists as just a bunch of selfish, spoiled children with no consideration for other road users and who are really not "grown up" enough to make decisions for themselves, thus need to be controlled.
To the OP, from what you've said, it doesn't sound like you did anything wrong. Without actually asking the other biker what they were disapproving of, it's impossible to say why they were shaking their head. But, as long as you can justify what you did and why you did it in terms of safety, not inconveniencing others and making progress, then what you did was fine.
And, I don't give a toss what bike you ride, if you wear POLITE high vis, if you have a top box or anything else. If you're a biker, you're a biker.
…. although …. let's not mention Harleys!!!
