Not me as I live close by. But there will usually be track dayers staying at the Alvanley Arms which is close to the circuit. Bring your ice scraper for Wednesday morning!

Lol - exactly... don't fancy the long drive up in the dark and icy conditions on @ 0400 on Wednesday morning.

Great day and almost too exciting

Too many 991 GT3s -if you read Pistonheads you would think they all owned by speculators! They are so much quicker than older Porsche’s such as my 993 and I’m not slow.

I was overtaking a 944 on the Lakeside straight, the 944 indicated so I overtook and simultaneously a car flashed by me at warp speed. I was doing at least. 100mph. Very scary and not happy. Perhaps I should have check my mirror before overtaking as I would on the road. However PCGB has clear rules about only overtaking when the slower car indicates-and I hadn’t indicated.

Another 993 had damage to its offside early in the day and I didn’t see it again

Did you report the car to Steve Kevlin?

what's scary is you were not aware of the cars around you ! maybe he was stuck behind you for 2 laps and thought the next straight was a safe over take as you were never going to pull over ! being stuck behind cars is infuriating esp if it's been a lap or worse 2 , and you know the car in front has never checked a mirror for 2 laps !

PCGB events are pretty good but the skills and age group is massive on them so one has to be aware of the cars behind you as well as the cars in front.

It was a good day in general. The GT (2, 3 and 4) cars were all quick. There were a few others not so quick which needed to be watched carefully and a very well driven 997 C4S Cab.

The track was noticeably quieter after 2:30.

Shame about the 1 litre Yaris with L plates which was a mobile chicane, you know who you are wink should have brought a proper car to a Porsche event...

It was good to meet up with some old friends and meet new ones, TDT’s ploughing demo was a highlight along with Boxsey’s kettle drivingcoffee

This, all day long, well said. There is definitely a large contingent of drivers who seem to ignore their mirrors.

But this should not put people off a PCGB track day, they are superbly run events, with the friendliest and most laid-back organisers. Long may they continue!

I didn't see a 1L Yaris ... though I did own one for 120,000 miles ....

All I know is that I had a ball in my "not a" 1L Yaris until the front pads were down to a minimum safe limit after 80 miles.

The most amazing thing was that the car said it had done 20 mpg since the pre-track day fuel intake at the local "Shell"

Hopefully I didn't hold anybody up ... though I did miss a gear in front of you whilst on the sighting laps so moved over to let you past smile

P.S. The car lied ... it was 13mpg when I topped up !

So it was another fun day... learning a lot about myself, the car, driving on track and also about Oulton Park in particular. Really a fitting end to the season for me. Good running with a little reminder at the end of the day that there is a long way to go and a lot to continue to learn.

Oulton Park is a pretty technical track - loads of gradient and you need to be committed. Was my 1st visit actually driving here, and this is my kind of circuit.
It was passenger laps at this circuit back at the RS day in March which lit the fire for me to get on track myself.. and 9 TD's later since stating in May, i've been turned into some kind of monster!..lol

As has been mentioned - the GT4 contingent was strong - with even a Birch Green making an appearance.
Great company in Boxsey, BubblesNW, Geoff39GL, ChrisW (in the Yaris GRMN - oh, that's a nice little thing with some really thought out engineering in there), plus some of the other guys I have met though the year - some names i can't remember.

The day started a bit late - as signing-on was busy and Steve gave the full fidelity briefing smile
The familiarisation/sighting laps were only good enough to really see which way the track goes and spot for the parts of the track that were still a little damp under cover. Anyway thats the purpose.
Had some running in the morning and seemed to get up to a reasonable pace before lunchtime - tyre pressures dialled in.
I then had some runs with Todd and then BubblesNW - who both know the circuit a lot better than me. Let's just say - I got the knowledge.... I believe this is BubblesNW's local so the laps with him in my car and then me in his were really enlightening - and armed with that - I decided to go to work.

Had some really good laps, as BubblesNW says the track was much quicker in the afternoon. I was then running low on fuel. Came back in about 1530 and ditthered about calling it a day or refuelling going out again.
I needed the fuel in any case so queued up - got that and then lid on and back out.
This is where it all came together - fastest laps of the day - and really able to attack... but I did get bitten.

On what turned out to be my last lap of the day, I was coming through Cascades with what felt like the best speed of the stint and sweeping through Island Bend i saw a slower car upfront, but this caused me to a little less precise with my line, trying to get down into the cambered part of the turn - I lifted a little which cause the car to move towards the inside of the circuit - i didn't turn enough to bring the car back down and touch the grass with my front right.. was then a bit of a passenger..180 degrees and heading backward on the grass.. I consciously avoided any eye contact with barriers and a little bit of steering and car control brought me rest in the middle the of the grass - no damage.

Needless to say, it was a slow trundle back to the paddock to assess the car and recover my pride.

I'm sure my car is worthless now - who'd have thought it.. a GT car that goes on track and gets involved!... rolleyes

I was running the Porsche Track Precision App and my VBOX Sport. I didn't actually look at time during the day, but have been pleasantly surprised with my progress throughout the day..
My lap times from the VBOX are as follows:

  • Familiarisation laps were slow behind the instructor.. so not representative 2m50s
  • Second Stint before lunch @ 1130 best... 2m 12s
  • First stint after lunch @1330 best... 2m 9s
  • Third Stint @ 1430 best...2m 2s
  • Final Stint of the day @ 1540...2m 1s
  • VMAX for the day was 118.3MPH down through Lakeside.
  • Theoretical ideal of 1m59s across all session for the day.
Looked like fairly good progression and this was my first time driving at Oulton Park - I didn't even have time to look at any track guide for preparation like I usually would do for a first visit - so am happy - and I felt the improvement thought the day as i got more confident and learnt my way around.

In the end it was such a great day and a great track I decided I wanted to take home some of cheshire's countryside with me smile... thats my story anyway and i'm sticking with it!.

Car was already booked in for its end of season stage 1 wheels off detail on Tuesday, so the guys will have plenty to do... and I'll bel getting my monies worth, oh, and Thank God for PPF!

Looking forward to the RS day, to open the 2019 Season.

Nice writeup TDT. I could tell you were enjoying OP by that grin you had on your face all day. biggrin

Well done for surviving the excursion. Island is tricky to get right at the speeds our cars are capable of. But is exhilarating when you do get it nailed. If I may, the way I (have been taught to) do it is: Light brake at the top of Lake and stay in gear (4th in our cars), turn in at the far side of the track that takes you to the island circuit, clip the apex of Island and while maintaining the small amount of steering lock get straight back on the throttle all the way to Shell oils. In that last phase the car will initially drift towards the inside of the track but then follow a natural path back to Shell. It takes a bit of faith to trust that you won't run out of track on the right. But when you do, it becomes a very quick bend.

Did you report the issue to the organisers?
