1.8TSI engine - 2011 Superb
Discussion
Morning all,
I was looking at a potential purchase of a 2011 Skoda Superb 1.8 TSI. (Approx 50k miles)
Just been doing a bit of research and seen multiple instances of timing chain issues on this engine.
Can anyone confirm that this year/engine combo is the one effected by these issues?
the car has been serviced every year, the first 4 at Skoda, the rest at independent, if that makes any difference.
One other thing to note, the last MOT noted 'slight oil leak' as an advisory, I'm obviously going to ask about this and if it has been sorted.
Obviously if it's quite likely that the engine will die because of this issue, I'll walk away. But it's a nice car at the right price so don't want to discount it without good reason.
Many thanks

I’m assuming it’s the 160bhp/250Nm. Two main issues with it; timing chain tensioner and poorly designed piston rings resulting in high oil consumption. Plenty of info on Skoda forums.
An updated revision of the timing chain tensioner was available in 2012 I believe so that’s some preventative maintenance to hopefully avoid chain related engine failure.
Oil consumption problem affected the 1.8 and 2.0 petrols of that era but not all suffered with it. Quite a few people have had Audi, Skoda, rebuild the engine with updated piston rings for free or paid a contribution. Prerequisites are a full main dealer service history in most cases.
Slight oil leak could be from turbo hoses. Wouldn’t be a massive bill I’d imagine if caught and fixed early.

From what was mentioned you can get the latest revision tensioners and chain for about 1k fitted (this was a few years ago) it is the same engine as is used in all the new cars (EA888) in either 2.0 or 1.8. 2009 was when the engine first appeared in skodas and I'm pretty sure 2012 was the latest revision but this may have changed IIRC.
Didn't realise the 1.8 TSI suffered chain issues too! I've had that problem with a 1.4 TSI and it was very annoying. Also heard quite a few complaints from 2.0 TSI owners.
In the Superb you're probably better of with the 2.0 TDI. In CR guise it's a very solid engine and suits the size of the car well, particular with the DSG 'box. Just avoid the earlier PD version and maybe think twice about getting the emissions 'fix' applied
