Was looking at a BMW 330i but fancied trying the next model size up.
Started looking at value for money in terms of spec and driving engagement. The Mk4 Mondeo seems to be the clear winner from what I've read.
My options budget wise are a mk4 in tit x with the 2.5t petrol. Fuel costs put me off as I heavy foot so I'd expect 25mpg avg. Also it's only in pre-facelift and I wanted the facelift.
So the other option is terms as an all round is the Mk4.5 in Titanium X 2.0 TDI. Problem is my mileage is low at 10k per year. Commute Monday to Friday is 25 miles each way on A roads and motorway.
Opinions on petrol vs diesel and whether the Mondeo is the great all rounder everyone makes out?

I've had a 2.5T for the last two and a half years. I really enjoy driving it, I think it drives very well. I'm averaging 33mpg, but I generally drive with a light foot and a lot of dual carriageway miles.
I think the facelift looks slightly better, why not get the 240bhp (I think) 2 litre petrol? However I'd think your journeys of 25 miles on faster roads won't be a negative thing to a diesel.

Based on your mpg comment and lightness of your foot i would definitely be sub 30mpg. It was painful to watch 60 quid go in my old 330ci when I was getting 25mpg. I've looked at the facelift petrols but that seem thin on the ground! Also the 240 is auto only I believe which I don't want unfortunately.
163bhp 2.0Tdi seems to offer the best compromise of cost vs performance
I have a Mk4.5 2012 Titanium X Sport Estate with 2.0 Diesel I am more than happy with it, round trip to work 25 miles, currently getting around 41 MPG.
I was driving a 1 Series and needed something bigger so i was looking for a 3 or 5 Series estate but couldn't find one in the exact spec i wanted (too fussy) the Mondeo came up for sale at a local dealership and i went to have a quick look on my way home from work but was sure i wanted a BMW, ended up having a quick drive and really liked it.
My only slight issue with the car is that i don't enjoy the cost of replacing the tyres 235/40/19 but you cant have everything!

With your usage I'd a diesel will be okay the 2.5T is a great car but if petrol is out then the Mondeo 2.0d is a good shout but depending on your budget the 2.2d is worth seeking out as is the 508 GT.
Budget is 7k tops. What is a good mileage to aim for regarding diesel before things need big bills to replace? Is the 2.2 significant better than the 2.0? I was hoping to get a 163 and remap it if I needed more go.
Drove my grandads 508 allure 2.0 hdi and while it was nice, the ergonomics were poor and the gear change was awful!

Thanks for the feedback! I'll be looking at the titanium x and 18 inch wheels so hopefully won't have the same tyre problems

My 2012 Titanium X (163) 2.0l diesel is running on 235/45/R18 98Y tyres. Currently F1 Autocentres seem to be the cheapest I can find at £129.90 each for Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 tyres. Take care when looking for tyres, though. When I search by my registration number, "the computer" often spits out the wrong tyre size. Perhaps (I bought it second-hand) the previous owner changed to a different wheel size over that specified new? Worth pointing out if you order your tyres online though...
I've had my Mondeo for 6 years. Mechanically trouble-free too. And the bodywork issues I've had were not down to factory faults either. All round good cars in my view. I test drove a few BMWs and Audis while looking for a car, and the Mondeo was just the best all rounder for my needs. Everything else I looked at after I'd seen it just had me going back to the Mondeo as the better car, so I bought it even though the dealer wouldn't budge on price.

You can get a 163 version but it won't be in range topping Titanium X Sport form:Is the 2.2 significant better than the 2.0? I was hoping to get a 163 and remap it if I needed more go.

Obviously there's the Insignia where you can land a top of the range model that'll be either newer or lower mileage or both.

The Mondeo would be my first choice followed by the 508 then Insignia & Accord for me.
I run a 163 tdi as a run about. They do fill the sweet spot in value and handling although the interior is a bit low rent in places. You would have to spend a lot more money to get a material step up in car (Think BMW 530 - and even then, against the 2.5 that is questionable).
While the 163 very good for what is a mass market eco diesel estate, it is just that, a mass market diesel estate. It’s not going to set your pants on fire, so if you’re looking for ‘get up early on a Sunday morning’ driving thrills, try and find the petrol version.
I would have though a 25 mile commute would be long enough to keep the DFP happy.

I keep banging on about it but my 263k 2.0 mk4 tdci is absolutely fabulous. Obviously it was cheap but the way it has dealt with those miles in the interior is remarkable. It genuine drives (pardon the cliche) like a 40k car. Ample performance and decent econony. I spent a fair bit of time in a 2.5t (and previously owned a focus st) and whilst it has better performance, its not as signicant as the numbers suggest and the mpg and VED make it unattractive to me. Mine is a titanium x with the 18s and the ride is really very very good, but still had a reasonable amout of feel bought this car by chance but would definately have another if/when it dies!
