I would have totally expected to find the answer this this as the first hit on Google, but I didn’t, so here I am.

I turned on my 1 series (F21) on Monday to see the BMW logo on the iDrive Screen and then nothing else. Since that I have tried every hard reset including disconnecting the battery for the morning. I don’t fancy taking it into a BMW garage to get changed £100 to be told that I need a brand new part that’s over a grand, so here I am.

Questions:

I can only assume that this can be caused by a fault in the head unit (anything else I can try)?

I have found a number of head units on eBay from between £55-£900 from scraps, is it the case that I can just replace link for like and everything should work, or am I being naive that it work start kicking off about being different?

Example of one on ebay…https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-1-Series-F20-2011-To-2015-CD-Player-Stereo-Headunit-928172369/173468616863?hash=item286389089f:g:k8wAAOSwDqlartOz:rk:10tongue outf:0

I have also seen uprades, so mine doesn’t have SatNav on it, but some on ebay include that, again would this function with the existing screen/controller or would more need to be replaced?

I would be REALLY interested in finding this out too. Mine has done the same (might be the cold weather?).

If i get a replacement head unit form the same model is it a straight replacement or is there some coding required?

My understanding is that they need to be coded to the car and one removed from a scrap / stolen car isn't going to be plug and play. I bought mine from this guy https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/tomtechtronic?_trksid=p...

Thanks for this, do you mean that you bought your head unit or the re coding stuff from this guy.

I have seen a document on BMW re-coding but its 48 pages long and there are comments like "dont click here or you will brick your car".
