Last night are coming in and deciding what to cook, me and the other half decided that we really can't be bothered to A) decide what to cook and B) to actually cook it and we both agreed if money was no boundary we would employ a chef to cook for us all the time.

However money is a boundary (a big boundary, because I hate spending money on food) its not tangible, and although I like a good meal, I am just happy with a jacket potato for tea.

There seems to be plenty of online retailers selling frozen meals, delivered direct to your door which seems like a great idea. Pricing seems a little more than our weekly shop for the equivalent number of meals, but not as much as I was expecting.

Does anyone have any experience with any companies that deliver frozen ready meals? Are they actually any good or a waste of time? I am based near York, so any local suppliers would be much appreciated.

Surely we can't be only mid twenties couple who can't be bothered to cook?

I went round a factory of one of the big players in the elderly frozen meals on wheels market

mostly staple 'british meals' due to the market tastes, but it was all cooked as you would at home, just bigger pots!

meat an veg in one end, chopped and diced, in to the pots/oven, add seasoning, dished up, and flash frozen

I would happily have eaten it, in fact i think its what they serve in their canteen

^^^ this is the issue you will have

most frozen meals delivered are prepared for the elderly market, small portions of very traditional food.

I would have thought your best bet would be delivery from a supermarket which will have a more diverse range of meals and larger portions/ability to double up on dish components etc

From the same company, Apetito, that prepares meals on wheels for some social services.

Isn't this exactly what Iceland do? Ready meals, decent portions for most meals, and tons of options.
Some will pick and deliver your food,£30 minimum, but not in all areas I believe.

Assuming you own a fridge, and freezer, what is wrong with just getting Sainsburys / M&S to deliver a weeks chilled or frozen ready meals?

I believe you can even set up an auto repeat order

My father-in-law started using them as a fall-back, but now eats one of their meals (inc pudding) for his main meal every day he's at home. He thinks they're marvellous.

Don't know how delivery would work for a couple out all day - his get delivered during the day (but they're flexible if he's going to be out) but I would imagine they're geared up for daytime delivery.

Have you tried batch cooking? Maybe do it on a weekend Sunday before you go out or maybe in the afternoon? cook 2/3 different meals and then box up for lunchs/reheat in the week for dinners?

or a slow cooker? prep the night before, throw it all together first thing and use a wifi plug and set it to come in when you're in work. perfect for when you get home?

I guess i like cooking, i just don't like the cleaning afterwards lol

I don't see how this is useful, it's too slow, can't post things through a letterbox and has a limited capacity.

They often do special offers - 3 to serve one for a tenner or three meals to serve two for £18.

Bidfood make some tasty stuff that needs to be boiled or microwaved, a friend works in hospitality and sometimes gets excess food he gives away when the menus change.

Cook stuff is lovely. You get what you pay for - you certainly can't compare it to frozen meals from Iceland!

However, I do find this thread a bit depressing.

When we were in our mid twenties, pre children, I used to love cooking meals together with a good bottle of wine or a few beers.

I don't enjoy it as much now as it tends to be at about 8pm once the kids are asleep, so it's not quite as relaxed!

Take the time to cook OP and save some cash.

Maybe this is why no other house in our street puts out their green bin during winter months.

In the summer it can also contain garden waste i.e. grass clippings, but no one mows their lawns in the winter so no bins get put out even though the're also for food waste. We always have peelings, cores, roots etc. but if all you eat is fast food or ready meals you don't have that - a sign of the times I suppose.
