Who pays .. you or your partner?

For me it's always been pretty clear cut on the first date where I have specifically asked a woman out to dinner/drinks. And I have always liked the rule:-
"If you take a lady out and she doesn't offer to pay, she wasn't bought up right. If you don't insist on paying, you weren't bought up right"
(very old school and obviously this is strictly a first date situation where the man specifically asked to take the woman out)
After that and once in a relationship it should be much more equal. Obviously if one side of the partnership insists on going to the most expensive place available then they should be expecting to foot most/all of the bill though. Some married friends I know alternate it each time they go out (or split the bill between drinks and food and the alternate that each time they go out).
