So we got an email round today saying these devices are going to be installed.

Management say it's to audit how many desks are being used and how they are being used, as we have an office move coming up.

Would you be cool with this? Several people have already emailed management saying they do not agree and are withholding consent to being subjected to the sensors.

I don't think I'd mind this as long as the data was anonymised. An anonymised data set would, in my opinion, be a reasonable compromise allowing the company to better understand the use of its office space, without being an overbearing tool to spy on its workforce.

No doubt they won't be anonymising the date though...

In one simple sweep you've managed to sum up an attitude that makes people distrust devices like this. It's not meant to be a spy to see if you stay put all day.

I understand the concerns OP, really depends how slippery your management is and what their real intentions are. Is the office really so large that someone can do this analysis themselves rather than installing these devices.

Had them installed in a place where I do some work - they're battery powered. Batteries went 'missing' from them as soon as they were installed and reinserted just before they were removed. Data won't be anonymised as the sensors serial number will be matched to desk numbers and if you are not a hot-desker, then you can be identified.

Ask to see a copy of the Data Privacy Impact Assessment they would've done prior to rolling these out. No DPIA done? Oh dear...
