Next commute car 150 miles a day
Discussion
Ok my current car is coming up for its MOT not sure if it will need a lot of work so getting ideas for replacement.
Saab 9-3 aero 2003 model, it’s petrol paid £500 for it and have put 25k on it. In that time had to do wheel bearing, part of exhaust, brakes and 2 services. I can get 40mpg at sensible speeds but this drops if I’m being enthusiastic. Car is very comfortable so will keep it if it doesn’t need much work but want to get an idea of what others use?
A few guys at my work have diesels and keep telling me to get one but then they have both had big bills so I’ve stuck with petrol.
I’m not into leasing or new just cheap commuter with comfort being important.
Thanks.

Pre-gumph (so c2005) diesel should get rid of some issues, stay manual and remove another potential cost centre. My key picks at sub £1k (beyond buying on condition and recent consumables spend) would be:
c2003 Peugeot 406 2.0 HDi
Similar age (up to 2005) Volvo S80/S60 D5 (2.0D usually ok also)
c.2004 VW Passat/Audi A4/A6 or Skoda Superb with the 1.9 130 PD engine
