So a friend at work commutes about 100 miles per day when not working from home. Annual mileage about 18k(ish). They have a young child (with associated paraphernalia) and like the idea of a small SUV type vehicle. I think that a practical hatch may also suit.

  • Budget between 10k and 15k if buying outright but open to the idea of a finance deal if makes more sense financially.
  • Reliability is more important to them than driving dynamics.
  • Erring towards diesel due to the mileage but could be convinced otherwise I think.
  • They aren't keen on Ford; beyond that they are pretty open to ideas. They've taken a shine to the Suzuki SV4. They like Hondas.

I wonder whether a Leaf might suit them - or perhaps a Pug 3008. What would the good citizens of Pistonville think?

Civic 1.6 Dtec sounds perfect for the job, available in hatch or estate. IIRC the Hatch has the biggest boot in its class and clever rear seat systems. EX Plus model specifically are extremely well equipped

Not a small SUV but you can get a late facelift 2016 Honda CRV SE with Nav and DASP with 29k miles on it for less than 15k. 1.6d 2WD which is quoted as 64.2mpg combined and £30 a year road tax. Year's manufacturer warranty left.

If too big then there's also the HRV at similar spec and money, but it's based on the Jazz chassis and not as premium as the CRV.

There's also the Suzuki Vitara which is a very good car. You can get a 2018 model with 27 miles on the clock so pretty much brand new for £14k and that's the SZ4 so nearly top spec.
