A6 Shopping... How many horses do I want?
Discussion
Greetings wise and learned Audi owners!
I`m looking around for a replacement for my 2002 S6 which I bought 2nd hand in 2010, and it`s been a terrific car but like and old pet, it`s time to say goodbye.

I thought I`d do my bit for the planet and downsize from a 4.2 to 3.0, so I am aiming to replace it with an A6 in the 2012 - 2015 age range, with a diesel engine. Of course we then get the option of 204, 245 or 313 PS with the various states of tune that the diesel 6-pot comes in.
My inbuilt tendency is to go for the 313PS, but I am wondering amongst those out there that may have experienced or test driven the 313 alongside the others, how big of a difference they may have found the power?
By my research regarding acceleration the 313 should be a smidge quicker than my current car, the 245 a bit slower, and the 204 noticeably slower.
Any thoughts?

I can only go as far as recommend the 313 (as had one the last 5 years), it is a bit of a torque beast and does have a surprising amount of speed. Handling is ok but its a 2T estate car not a sports car, so as long as that is in yoiur mind you can travel very swiftly.
recommend it if you want a diesel, There was a 3.0 TFSI Petrol version produced but that's rarer than the BiTdi
The C7 price can vary a lot dependent on options, The Tech pack or Tech pack Advanced are a must IMO, as gives the bigger central screen and google maps. The black edition is desirable and make it look nice especially combined with a lighter color (again personal taste) The Colour palet wasn't great unless you paid extra (not seen and Hulk coloured ones, Lovely Colour BTW

With piddly nav and no heated seats? What a weird specification.Edit: Doesn't have sport diff either, owner is mistaken. The dealership it's from are notorious for inaccurate adverts too.

Thanks for the inputs! Currently leaning towards this nicely specced 313, about to drop them a message and arrange a skid!

Thanks, it`s a nice colour. The Hulk, or Kermit as most people tend to call it, is Java Green, and it`s a rare sight I am sure, especially on Swiss roads!
I have never owned a diesel with the exception of a LR Discovery a while back, but have driven a couple of these new iterations and they sure don`t remind me of a tractor any more!! There is certainly a much bigger selection of the diesels in CH than the petrol ones. This is the family wagon, and I have a decent sports car for when the diesel doesn`t quite cut it

Yes, like the handling of the S6, more that of a GT, a lot of weight to contend with on the twisty roads where it is no sports car, but still gets along ok, and on the long haul it chews up the distances effortlessly. The Colour palet wasn't great unless you paid extra (not seen and Hulk coloured ones, Lovely Colour BTW

Agreed, 313 if you have the option. The 8 speed box in it is excellent and durable. Experience dictates no real economy penalty for the more powerful car either.
313 is making sense, just trying to be rational, but yeah, who am I kidding!Gio G said:
If I were in your position, coming from that lovely S6, I would be going for the 3.0TFSI version - aka supercharged petrol. Leave those diesels for buses and coaches

I assume it's just mirrored and not LHD? Icehanger said:

ooo and heated steering wheel, quite handy for Switzerland!
Just to give this little thread some closure, inform anyone remotely interested, (and show off my new wheels) I finally took delivery of the S6 replacement today, after telling the dealer I would take it back on December 17th! A combination of Swiss officialdom being closed over the festive season and the car dealer being on holiday meant a near four week wait, really tries the patience... but here is what I decided on, a 2014 A6 allroad 3.0 BiTDI.
Had to be the 313PS really... The thing really snorts when you punch it.
Pretty mint condition, and while I am not a huge fan of black cars, I think these things really work in black.

Nicely specced, MMI plus, ACC, electronic doohickeys for Africa, no heated steering wheel though...

I`m resurrecting this thread after the most decent jaunt I have had in the A6 allroad since getting it.
We have knocked out 18000km (11000 miles) since Jan and it has not missed a beat although there are messages popping up for ACC and adaptive light system faults which I need to get seen too, but if does not change things really.
It has been well driven around the roads of Switzerland, and to France and Germany, it is a great everyday family car and with that terrific load space that I love to have, extremely versatile. It is certainly quick too, I would say about the same as the S6, but without the aural drama, although with the fuel savings I can kind of forget that...
The only noticeable negative difference is that while only a fraction longer, wider, taller and heavier than the S6, it`s certainly not as chuckable. How much that has to do with the air suspension I do not know but the old car was a better drive in the twisty stiff, more planted.

Yesterday we loaded up at home in Switzerland, boot 70% full, three people, and headed to Italy, a trip that normally happens a couple of times a year but this was the first opportunity for the "new" car, a trip of 640km. It chomps through the motorway like a GT, and once in Italy with it`s seemingly unenforced motorway speed limit it was laughable to sit on 180km/h (110 mp/h) and see the rev counter on 2200rpm! A very comfortable and easy drive and while not a back road warrior still extremely threadable through the bends.
What makes it so much cooler is to arrive at the in-laws country house in Tuscany, put it into allroad to traverse the long, bumpy and rutted driveway while seeing the trip average at 7.1L per 100 km (40MPG)

Great car.

Great car.

I have the same as my work horse and agree that its brilliant.
Fast enough to keep up with fast motorway traffic- comfy enough for long journeys - practical enough to carry almost anything over most terrain - MPG in the 40s really isnt painful!!
Not sure what I could replace it with!!
