I fancy an E46 M3 as a fun car, I.e. not the daily driver. Hence, I’m trying to find a classic insurer that will cover it, a few I’ve oken to have a minimum age of the car of 20 years, hence not covering it. Anyone running one of these on a classic policy ?

I have heard of this caveat before re: 20 years, mine is 17 years old, and its insured with Admiral, not on classic policy but part of my multicar.

It doesn't cost much to insure anyway but i dont use it for work, commuting or business - its on a low mile 3K a year, social only, i pay £281 a year fully comp in Rural Yorkshire, garaged, full NCD, £300 excess.

Mine is.

2004 car.

It’s through classic line insurance. You don’t accrue NCB on these policies though.

I managed to insure a 2001 M5 on a classic policy in 2015, so it is possible.

Thanks guys. Re the admiral multi car, the problem I’m finding is I need to keep my other cars, hence, I don’t have spare NCB.

I’ve never got this, the NCB should apply to the driver, not the car or policy. Seems an antiquated way of doing things !

Thanks for the tips on classic, I’ll try classic line.

As i understand the rules on NCD are you can use it on up to 2 cars, i have this issue also and my Ferrari is insured with Zero NCD but Multi car is actually separate polices i have the Ferrari on a classic policy, with agreed valuation but under multi car making it simpler to manage, the only car i dont have on multicar now is the 924, but i might even move that next year. From my experience there is little discount offered or NCD with classic policies if you join a car club you get discounts though.

If you can get the M3 on Classic policy fair enough, you could also try Adrian Flux - Flux Direct (I have my Porsche 924s with them really good value - again no NCD option)

Classicline were always good for my E-type, but used Lancaster and they price matched.

Good luck.

You can only use NCB on one car. Mutlicar policies are different, but you cannot use your NCB on one car with X company and the same NCB on another car with Y company.

I use Footman James for my E36 M3. Its 21 years old, insurance is £400 per year on a classic policy.

You cannot get NCB and are mileage limited on it but I thought it was a fair price.

I have my M3 with Classicline...really only with them because I sold the Porsche and moved it over.

Classicline should cover it on one of their policies geared towards ‘future classics’.

I had a reasonable quote for an E46 M3 earlier this year, but ended up with a 996 C2, also insured with Classicline.

Surely it depends on how much you have. I.e. say Max is 9 years, but you have 18 you should be able to split it, or does that not work? I've not had 2 cars before so thats just how I assumed it did.

Spoke to classicline today. Great quote on an M3, first people that seemed to actually understand how I want to use it, what it is etc. Thanks for tips. Car shopping to begin in earnest now !

They are so so helpful and don't rush you in any way or try any type of "pressure" to get you to take out a policy.

Massive thumbs up from me...!!!

Nope, you can only use the whole lot on one car.

I don't understand how it works though, you have x amount of ncb why can't it be split? (I'm not trying to be dense but I just don't get it).

Try A-plan, they have been very flexible with me & have "mirrored" my no claims onto my second car.

Looking around 10k, manual, coupe, as standard as poss. Don’t mind mileage, more about condition, maintainence.

Another vote for ClassicLine. Their classic policies generally start from 20 years old and over, however for anything newer, they can look at one of their modern classic policies.

I have 4 cars with them - two hotrods and two dailys. But they are great for all marques, TVR, Porsche, BMW, Ferarri and VW etc and are used to looking after all modifications given their hotrod and American cover.
