Bupa for company PHI?
Discussion
Hi all,
I run a small business and am in the process of setting up a company PHI scheme.
Bupa would be the obvious choice and I've had what seems to be a reasonable set of quotes from them.
Does anyone have any experience of alternative providers or postive/negative experiences with Bupa?
Many thanks in advance!

Better known as PMI (Private Medical Insurance). BUPA are obviously the market leader in terms of market share but there are better and possibly less expensive options. Either go to a broker or get quotes from Aviva, AXA and Vitality. Make sure it is like for like as there are many different options.
I am covered by AXA/PPP at work and they have been fantastic with a problem I have currently.
Not sure if it is the level of cover i have but they have so far covered everything I have needed.
Previously had BUPA and I effectively ran out of cover before they got to the problem, fortunately my then employer stepped in and picked up the additional costs.

I would steer clear of Aviva. I have run a company scheme for two years or so and from an employer side they are hard work. You can also look to some of the benefit consultancies. Some of them run their own group scheme underwritten by many of the common players. The potential benefit to you is better value as you are pooled with a much larger group to leverage scale.
We undertook a review of our benefits package, including PHI, last year. With regards PHI we were with BUPA and they performed well enough on the odd occasion they were used.
The review identified AXA, which we have had in place for just over a year because they offered some enhanced benefits at a slightly cheaper rate, although we haven't had need to try out the service as yet.
I would undertake a review and see how the different options pan out for your particular requirements.

I had BUPA in my last job and needed them for a neck pain that was actually a pinched spinal cord that needed surgery ASAP.
it wasnt too much of a faff to sort everything out. The private room after surgery was just what I needed. I would rate the experience a 9/10 only let down by presumably not enough staff on hand at night to respond to the nurse buzzer if I needed something..
