Apple CarPlay issues
Discussion
Hey all,
I have a 2018 718 and the Apple CarPlay seems to be really temperamental with my iPhone 6.
Although my phone works fine in a vw and a civic typeR I have for the weekend. And my friends/ wife’s phones work ok in my car.
Yet when I had a demo gts my phone had the same issues.
I’ve even been to Apple to get my phone checked and they say it’s fine, and when I rebuild my phone it’s fine until I restore all my apps.
Anyone else had similar issues or any advice?
Car and phone software is up to date. Changed cables etc.
Pls help because it’s winding me up not being able to use Spotify consistently. Puzzled why it works ok in other cars so wonder if it’s a setting which conflicts with the pcm.
Help😄
Cheers

I had the same problem, had the car back to the dealership a couple of times.
Basically i found that if my phone was connected to the cars WiFi hotspot ( which you need to do to access the connect functions) apple play would not work.
I had to either turn of WiFi on my phone or ‘forget the network ‘ of the cars WiFi.
They are supposed to work together but they don’t. I found it was either apple play or the connect services. Even then the connect services didn’t work properly. I was told that eventually there would be an update to correct but heard nothing yet.
Hope this helps

When you say connect services are you referring to the apps on the pcm or on your phone? I have the connect app on my phone which works, but haven’t connected it to the car’s WiFi - is there any benefit to doing this?
One thing I didn’t say - when I use smartlink, when I first connect the car via the usb, my phone pops up as connected using apple CarPlay, then four seconds later it says no device found. It’s like CarPlay won’t fire up on my phone. Also sometimes it only recognises is an iPod only.

Works absolutely fine for me, sometimes I’ve had it hang (very rarely) I find manually shutting down the app on the phone and then going back into it from PCM resolves it.
I’d suggest isolating the problem by trying someone else’s phone to see if the issue is replicated
I’ve tried others phone and seems to work fine. Funny you mention the connect app too. I never have this open when connecting CarPlay (not sure you need to either, given my friends phones work ok without it, unless this is the conflict I’m having. Will give it a go thanks).I’d suggest isolating the problem by trying someone else’s phone to see if the issue is replicated

i had the same problems
found that i has to turn off wifi and bluetooth on my phone
and set pcm setting to connect via usb only
and it worked
then i found it didn’t charge my phone !
so now tbh i use bluetooth to connect to my pcm and play music and make calls via bluetooth and rarely use car play anymore......

Bizarre! Sounds like a glitch with certain phones and the PCM... might need to replace the sodding iPhone. Fortunately I’m due for an update soon. found that i has to turn off wifi and bluetooth on my phone

Just an update on this. If I turn off the pcm off by holding down the on button for 10 seconds whilst the phone is connected, when the system comes back on CarPlay statts fine. My car is an 18 plate so is running the latest software. I’m guessing there is a glitch in the software somewhere.
