Long story short:

Employed a young lad last year as an apprentice. Lad had autism and was difficult to mould at work but all my staff worked hard with him and we made lots of progress. The net effect to the firm was actually a negative but for certain on a human level the lad benefitted and left us after a year a much more rounded and capable individual.

Terms of apprenticeship were that we would give him a year and receive £500 in the middle and £500 at the end of the term. We received the first £500 as agreed.

At the end of the 12 months we paid him up and bid him farewell. It was time for another employer to take over move it forward for him. I asked for the second £500 and was told that because we had employed him start September 2017 to end August 2018 we had not coincided with the end of the academic part of his apprenticeship and so we wouldn’t be receiving the £500. I explained to the collage that the only reason we didn’t coincide was that their course started mid September, and ended mid September - and that our apprentice was keen to start as soon as possible 2017 and didn’t want to wait a further 2 weeks kicking around at home. I also asked “are you being deliberately awkward? He did a year with us and a year with you - does offsetting of 2 weeks actually make a material difference?” No reply - and no money.

I decided to leave it but my partner was really annoyed and emailed our local MP. Two weeks later, following an “informal” meeting between the MP and the collage (which apparently happens regularly anyway) - I receive a remittance advice and £500 in our account the day after.

1) shame on the collage for being so damned pedantic

2) genuine surprise that Emma mailing the MP actually made any difference whatsoever!

Good result. The council I work for gets MP queries from time to time, and they do generally get things moving.

They're a notch above Councillor queries, but not quite on a par with ombudsmen or tv press queries

Which MP?

Given how useless most of them are it's good to be able to cut the decent ones some slack!

Well done for helping him.

Autism can present in many ways but regardless of the money its nice to hear he has benefitted and also an awareness raised with the staff

Good on you.
