I'm thinking of changing my daily and think a MK7 Golf R looks perfect.

Thing is it'll be 400-500 miles per week mostly motorway.

Am I mad?

Should I go manual or auto?

If its a long motorway cruise go manual, if its stop starty go auto. Ultimately, what do you prefer?

Seems a bit of a waste just sitting on the motorway for 2k miles a month, surely a luxo barge would be better? I can't see it being any different from driving a GTD apart from the fuel cost.

More time spent on the road equals less chance some scrotes would nick it for a robbery.

I do 450 miles a week in mine. Mostly motorway with some traffic. Besides the speed servicing comes around it’s fine... oh and I get about 33mpg on the motorway.

Quite surprising how easy it is to get up to motorway speeds.....

I have ran a DSG mk7, the 6spd one for the last 2 years, just got an B9 S4, my 2 cents is it really is a great car, does it all.....but it is pretty firm, normal mode helps but I never use it really. I defo would not go for the prets for a commuting car, the Cadiz 18's make it a bit more forgiving.

It grips like a limpet, I had no issues in the crap weather we see in Scotland, plus its a hoot with the traction off.

The standard stereo is crap IMO. I have the 3 door, random observation, the seat belt is really far back on the B pillar so you are always stretching to get it, you get used to it though and the doors bloody huge for car parks. The sport mode in auto I hate, it holds the gears so in town its always in 2 or 3, I use manual mostly. The gear change is great this way. The adaptive cruise is a good feature, but seems lazy if you change lanes, just takes that little bit too long to get back on the power if you let it do the work.

For the motorway I would want something a bit lazier ,it can drone a little on big runs, the seats are really comfy though. Daily runs I get 24 mpg, best I ever saw , the one time I had it in eco last year was 36mpg. It absolutely loves a drink and I run mine on 99 ron Worst I had was single figures but I was being a tit.

You would forget all that when you hit a B road, its genuinely one of the fastest B road cars I have ran, very very capable. These things are subjective I suppose, it really does tick a lot of boxes. I don't think I will miss it, I never really bonded with it for some reason.

Just my opinion, hope this helps

The amount of time you’re spending on the road is highly recommend getting something more comfortable with a lot more toys

Not mad. If that’s the environment you want to be in for long periods of time then good luck to you. Great cars and a lot of fun when you have the opportunity for spirited driving.

An Golf GTD is a far far better bet for a commute such as yours. It will be as quick, if not quicker, as it has huge low to mid range torque and will probably be 10 - 15mpg better than an R. We have an R in our household and I find the tyre noise to be horrendous, probably being fitted with pretoria's doesn't help. Engine noise is all but totally muted so unless you can find decent roads for the weekend blast it's just not worth the extra costs involved.

I ran a Mk7 GTD when I was doing 500 miles a week. Racked up almost 40k miles in the 18-months I had it

Found it to be a great long distance commuter, the DSG 'box worked incredibly well with the Adaptive Cruise control. Made my motorway commute almost completely effortless. The Manual would not have been the right choice for that type of driving.

Mine ended up costing me the same as an R would've done, but obviously I saved in fuel. Also keep in mind how often you want to be filling up, nice to not be visiting the fuel station more than once a week biggrin

33mpg on the motorway sounds poor for a 2l engine.

33mpg on the motorway sounds poor for a 2l engine OK for a 4wd 300hp car.
It's all those "positioning blips" where you just pop your foot down to ease other's travel, like when you're just overtaking something and you just blip it a bit to get past to get out of the way of the car approaching faster from behind.
And slip roads. Definitely slip roads

Driving on a motorway it's quite poor. You are neither using 300bhp or 4wd.

You can get a bigger engined more powerful petrol BMW that will beat 33mpg by a margin on the motorway.

I do 350 per week in a 535d same power but a 70ltr fuel tank and into the 40’s MPG.

As a motorway mile muncher it’s very very good- plus only 2 fills a month. In the RS6 is was filling up every 4-5 days which in the freezing winter was draining and bloody cold.

Auto is hassle free especially when doing M way - there will be congestion there will be accidents an auto just makes those times and the normal commute in totally relaxing.

Note I nearly went for an R when it was £214pcm but ended up with the 535d as golf clubs simply wouldn’t fit in the boot

If you’re paying for your own fuel, I wouldn’t personally.

I think it’s great on the motorway, the adaptive cruise control is brilliant, I can happily do a 4 hour drive to the coast In one hit and not know I’ve done it. Can also get high 30s mpg (7speed dsg).

A GTD would be much better if you’re paying for fuel. If you’re not, r for sure!
